This is my sister's first year growing dahlias. I always say the first year is always the best year, before you start getting caught up in disbudding, and pest damage doesn't bother you as much because the blooms are so stunning.
Two days ago, she sent me a picture of beautiful decent sized dahlia plants she's growing. Today, she woke up to "most of my plants are turning black." By the time I returned her text the plants had turned completely black. She had already googled and learned the frost she had last night killed her plants. When I called her back, I told her to dig the tubers and cut the stems off close to the tuber and replant. As soon as we hung up, I had second thoughts, but she didn't answer or reply to my text. My second thought was for her to wiggle the stems to break them slightly from the tuber so it will send up new shoot(s) without disturbing the roots.
What do you think is best? Do you have different thoughts?
