Cabin fever time of year in the upper Midwest

Mini hot spell here . Supposed to be 95 today and was about 90 yesterday and then 90 tomorrow and then high 70s for awhile. Perhaps it is summer here. That means no rain for a couple of months although once in a blue moon we might get some rain but rain would be in very small amounts . In some years we got some thunderstorms in late August but that has not happened in recent years. Rain used to start up again on September 15th each year but that is no longer a reliable date and October is more likely.

Teddahlia Our predictions are for just a few degrees cooler then you but definitely in the hot zone...And I am just getting my first dozen blooms of so. Thank goodness for the automatic watering system! And for my "Engineer" who keeps it working! Glad it is only supposed to hit the law 90's...Hopefully it won't bake my apples at the green stage on the trees like happened a few years ago when it went over 100. We are getting very gusty winds. I sure hope no one is playing with fire ......

It is summer time here. 90 degrees is pretty normal and it may get a little hotter. We in Portland Oregon are about 200 miles North of Dorr, Michigan. How is it we have a much warmer climate here? It has not been below zero here in my lifetime and I do not even remember it being below 10F. We have an all time record high of 107F (not counting the heat dome of 2021 when it hit 116F). Grand Rapids has an all time record high of 108F and a low of minus 24. The average day in Dorr is about 5 degrees cooler than us. We get about the same annual precipitation but almost none of our falls in July or August.

[unknown] I suspect the large bodies of water to the west of both of our locations plays a large part in that! Lake Michigan affects our weather in Dorr a lot. If we have a really cold winter and a lot of ice forms on the lake, it means our spring is much cooler and it takes a long time to warm up, like this winter/spring. I lived in Grand Rapids most of my life and despite Dorr being only 20 miles south of downtown GR, and only a little bit closer to lake Michigan, it's wild how much more lake effect snow we get. If there were no Great Lakes and everything else remained the same, I'm certain Michigan and all the other states surrounding the lakes would have drastically different climate! Maybe we'd be much warmer than Oregon even in winter! 😊

A few pictures of a different Great lake - Lake Superior from Presque Isle in Marquette, MI, which in my humble opinion, is one of the most beautiful places in the state and maybe anywhere. If any of you plan to come to the national show in Grand Rapids next year, and have extra time to spend in the state, it would be well worth renting a car and spending a few days in the U.P. - Presque Isle in Marquette and Pictured Rocks in Munising are must see spots!

I guess these pics are old. That's my now 16 year old!

OK I cheated. My commitment was to each day for about 27 days , to pound in 8 stakes and place the baling twine to hold up the dahlias. I have done about 19 rows without fail. But today it was 98F. I could not bring myself to carry the 8 posts 150 feet and slam them into the ground. Will I do 16
tomorrow to make up for it? The person in this picture taken in 2005 would have installed all the stakes in just few days that year.

Temperature went just over 100 degrees here yesterday. Fortunately today is back down in the upper 80's and the plants look fine so far. I did a tour of the Hydrangea Woods first thing this morning and with the drip system we installed they all look fine. Then on to the Dahlia Garden and no burned flowers or
foliage I could see...
