Baring any more predator attacks, let me know when you want ducklings. I will likely have them next spring. One little female appears to have more colors (like they should) and I am curious what color ducklings she might have.

We had to get another dorper ram to ensure we didn't end up having a herd with a shallow gene pool. His name is Prince and he has managed to be majestic and a goofball. He jumps around and dances when it's time to be fed.

Keeping everyone separated into certain groups is proving to be a pain as our herd slowly grows every year.

KitCMC most dorpers have the black heads and everything else is white but there's been some variations. The ewes seem to have them most of the time.

Victory! First half of the deck that tried to eat me is replaced! Next half need sto wait a month until next pay period but the half of the deck I access to get in and out of the house is now almost complete!

And more good news...the swamp that tried to eat my hydrangea garden will have a major drainage channel installed starting Tuesday! There should be no more rotting roots in this little peice of paradise I am making!

Lovely weather today. Finally not too hot..I think it got up to 79 degrees but with a nice breeze. I was actually trying to post a later pic of the deck work. Husband says it just needs 2 more boards and a narrow filler peice to fill the framework. . He's doing this the way he likes to manage the money..Next Payday he will do the other half of the deck. But I now have a safe pathway from the gate into the house. And the uneven spaces between the boards should even out as the wood dries completely.

And the first half is done! Now to wait for October and the 2nd half....IN the meantime he has someone coming t olook at the hot tub that was here when we bought the place and that he has not been able to get to work,. Hopefully, this will give us a definitive answer as to whether it can be fixed or will be removed. It is supposed to be a top of the line model but not sure how loong ago that was.....

It drives me crazy when flies buzz around a bunch while I'm washing and dividing tubers outside. Some of them bite too! 🤬 I looked online for a simple solution and the first one I tried is actually working. Fill glass jars or cups or clear zipper baggies with water and put one or a few pennies in each and set them around where you're working. The article suggested maybe flies think they're large eyes or something and that's what keeps them away. 🤷‍♀️ It's working well so I thought I'd share.

MissyWeitzel This is a practice widely used in the Amish communities in the Midwest near where I grew up (well, over in OH). They’d hang the baggies in open doorways and windows to deter flies from entering. It’s great to see this resurface here, and find that it’s working for you! So cool.

MissyWeitzel I have also seen this method used in restaurants in Mexico. The baggies are hung over entrances to keep flies out. They use crumpled up aluminium foil instead of pennies so I imagine anything shiny would do.

Current project - new veggie beds. I like how they’ve turned out. This whole space used to be occupied by a less-than-stellar example of a crabapple tree and two overgrown lilacs. The two new raised beds are 4’x8”. I’m not a huge fan of raised beds, but there are a lot of roots that need to rot before I plant much directly in the ground here.

Juliarugula this is lovely! It’s so inviting - have you planted anything?

Is that a weeping white spruce to the right? Did you stake the leader at all? I planted a trio last fall and one has a leader that points straight up, but the other two are bent 90° or more.

Juliarugula Oh I bet removing that tree and lilacs feels so freeing! I’m a huge fan of raised beds myself. Having had some measuring snafus this spring while building my own I can really appreciate the work that goes into them. Your trellis will be so nice to have for climbing veggies come spring. Great job, this space looks really fabulous.
