My HH Serenity gets some shade, although I’ve noticed that in general that I tend to get slightly deeper color on my dahlias than I expect from photos, so maybe it’s a midwestern climate thing.

NCDahlia Interesting thought about humidity. I’m in northern Indiana, and it does tend to be on the humid side here. Certainly compared to the Pacific Northwest.

Any guesses as to who the freakishly tall dahlia is? Or, to make it a little easier… who the hybridizer might be?

AndreaB If I had to guess I would say 99% that is a hollyhill dahlia lol. Hollyhill Zarina? I always have it grow 6.5 ft or higher some even as tall as 8.5 feet.

Love the fenced in garden you have really pretty area! And the water connection too awesome! 10/10

Juliarugula Great guess! Hollyhill Dungeness it is! Gotta get the ladder out for picture taking. HH Finlandia just doesn’t want to live at my house. I’ll be admiring your pictures.
NCDahlia HH Zarina is a great guess. I grow that one as well, but it’s about a foot shorter than Dungeness. I tie some of the taller ones to the fence for extra support, but Dungeness has outgrown the fence!

Beautiful blooms everyone! It’s so much fun to see what other people are discovering this year. Here are some photos with names.
Of the three purple/ burgundy varieties I have this year, one is a clear winner thus far. Here’s hoping the other two get into shape. The fourth bloom is another Jessie G that is a few days old. They hold up well. Arabian Night still shows a lot of chaff, and the blooms seem pretty fragile in a vase.

Did someone mention green centers? 😅 Camano Zoe, Rock Run Ashley, too many others to mention. Small World still has a greenish cast to it, but here’s hoping @NCDahlia is correct and the better temps ahead will improve things. I do have some afternoon shade from trees, but no shade cloth or anything.

Rose Toscano: I will always grow this one in multiples!

Parkland Tribute takes forever, from a tuber or a cutting. I remember a more luminous bloom last season. The colors this year have been more dark pink, even with ones like Miss Amara and Ferncliff Copper (which will hopefully show up tomorrow!)

Mystique. I’m still on the fence with this one. Some of them are droopy but the color is really nice. The plants are great. I’ve been leaving more flowers on the plants that face the street, so that passers by can enjoy them. Mystique may belong there, rather than the cutting garden. I’m intrigued by Bloomquist York for a better version of this smoky purple. But I don’t have it!

Almost all of mine are “beginner” varieties—small and relatively easy to grow. Penhill Watermelon is the only big one, and so far it’s been great. It’s nice to see your more adventurous choices! I’m keeping notes for next year. Thanks for sharing 😀

Juliarugula Hooray! I’m keeping notes for variety sharing at the end the season so I’ll set some aside for you too. I actually ordered Wyn’s Eeek! to grow for the first time this year. Here’s the photo I took of the tuber, it was the only one I ordered from a source I didn’t feel completely confident about. It was small, but looked healthy sprouting with some roots already.

To stay on-topic, I’m including a photo of what I think is Ad Lib on its way, although the tag has sunken into the grow bag and I’ve yet to fish it out successfully. I’m really hoping for a very, very purple, large bloom!

I fell in love with this one at a dahlia show last season and feel lucky to have found a plant at the midwest auction. It really appears to glow, even inside with poor lighting. Extra bonus points for being a Michigan origination.

I’m falling in love with varieties at Kitsap dahlia show this weekend! I’m wild about some that I’ve most certainly skipped over when shopping sales - on the flip side, there are varieties that have remained on my “want” list and seeing them irl, I’m like “meh”.

Irish Blackheart made me say “Wow” out loud to myself when I saw it at the show yesterday. I’ll be back today to look more closely and (hopefully 🫨) take better photos.

My AC Tweedly Dum hasn’t bloomed yet and seeing on here shocked me, didn’t realize what a beast it’s going to be!

Hollyhill Bewitched - whoa wow, I get it now. Also, I understand why the love of Pam Howden. Lots of her here!

When I return today, I’ll be going directly to this Hollyhill to read the tag. It was another that made me ~~explain~~ exclaim out loud to myself when I saw it - I LOVE this gorgeous beauty!

The kindest gentleman who is a judge at the show approached my partner and me yesterday and shared so much knowledge. He encouraged me to start entering blooms for showing, quizzed me on forms, what pot tubers are intended for, and lots of other data points that I’m so grateful to everyone here for helping me pass with flying colors! I also learned about “disc florets”! I didn’t know the term yet, only ray florets!

Did you order from Etsy? That’s where I got my Eeekk! Tubers. I was pretty pleased that they bloomed true to ID! They were definitely tiny, but both are very healthy plants. It was a good experience - I need to keep an eye on the seller for more tubers this year.

Love your show photos! I have some nice vigorous stock of HH Bewitched also. It’s very floriferous - one of the better bloomers in my garden. Is the last photo HH Pink Tigress? I’m growing that one this year too, but the plants have been very slow growing - no blooms yet.
