Steve knows too much about old time dahlia flowers and the people who bred them. I sat next to a person at the recent National show Banquet who was a friend of "Jack" . She said he was very generous person who helped out her society when it was first started. "Jack" was the "rockstar" of giant dahlias in those days and released numerous giant varieties. I remember reading an article about him in one of the first Dahlias of Today publications. I never met him but did order from him in the last year he was open.

Teddahlia I never met him either but did order from him a few times. My favorite of his was a dark purple (black) ball that has been long lost. I never grew the variety you posted but remember it could get well over 12".

Teddahlia I only remember the prefix to his intros but can't remember the name of this one. I assume her history will be included in your first book.

Speaking of distribution, have any of you hybridizers worked with another entity to distribute your tubers? Or farms that have listed and shipped tubers grown by a hybridizer? If you don't mind sharing details, I'm curious to know what percentages you settled on or if there is an unspoken rule or guideline regarding this. If it's too forward of a question, I completely understand not wanting to discuss those kinds of details here. Really just looking for a ballpark, not super personal details!

Missy, I would consider a 30% - 50% return to the breeder as a fair deal for both parties That would be for a one year exclusive release and no percentage after the release year. The vendor would grow the variety for a year before the release to evaluate and build up stock.
My parents (Alpen Gardens) always gave a 50/50 split to breeders when they introduced new varieties. They let the breeder set the selling price. This was decades ago but still sounds like a fair split.

SteveM I do this with Triple Wren Farms but I don't remember right off what the payment is. It would probably say if you look at Triple Wren Heritage program. I get a nice little check each Dec. Its not a lot and I could not live on it but it is nice and lets me buy some special new tubers from someone else with it. I don't have to have that money to survive, either thank goodness! And I just do the fun part and let them handle the work!

Let's talk Budapest Blush. I expected deep pink and white. Today I saw a post highlighting it as pink and yellow. My plant gave me small soft pink blooms. All three variations are not only different colors, but forms too. Does anyone know what the "real" Budapest Blush looks like?

I loved Budapest Blush this year. Much more than I thought I would. Mine started showing some virus signs when it got colder so I’ve already ordered another for next year.

Before we forget that giant flower that was posted above without it's name, I will state that Jack Almand was the breeder. The giant variety picture that was the largest one we ever grew was posted to see if the oldtimers would remember it's name. I got my stock of Almand Supreme from Ginger Clack many years ago. It was lost years ago but I will always remember the huge flower that gets bigger and bigger in my mind's eye and I am now sure that it must have been 16 inches in diameter (It was bit over 13 inches in reality).

AndreaB I did not. But, it’s on my want list for next year. This one was sold to me as Budapest Blush. I’ll have to Google search and see if possibly it wasn’t. I’m having to toss it anyway. Sadly.

DarcyD I think WB Misbehavin’ was a new intro from Rivers last year, so not that likely you would have gotten sent one as a mislabel from another seller. I assumed AndreaB was just saying they look similar…

happy thanksgiving all dahlia friends on here! wish everyone a great time with their family / friends tomorrow and through the weekend. may we all have a better growing season next year and no gophers or voles 🤣 Tomorrow i do my annual harvest of the 30 year old Japanese persimmon tree - well as high as i can pick which is 14ft orchard ladder then im 6'1 😂.
