I'm fine with this discussion here, but it would also have been a good candidate for a new discussion with that as a topic since it is pretty specific. If anyone is feeling like something needs its own discussion, I think it would be OK to create the new discussion and reply with the link as long as they were pleasant about it. I plan to be pretty relaxed about that stuff in both directions.

I've been looking for Sellwood Glory the past couple of years and not much luck finding it available from the very few sellers that do carry it. I contacted Swan Island to see if they may offer it up again in the future and they said they would not since it's terrible at storing for the winter (understatement). I just saw a great alternative named Sombrero although it looks a bit more red on the inside of the petals and a bit more yellow on the petal edges. It's a bit hard to tell with the limited amount of photos available online. I'm hoping some vendor will be able to get it and eventually make it available in the US.

I was also pleased to see Jackie Evangelista is still in existence and a couple of vendors offered it this year. This makes me hold on to a little hope that few more I had written off as extinct might still be around.

I am prejudiced against Sellwood Glory because when we first started to breed dahlias the flower customers wanted it instead of our seedlings. What makes it so good? Answer: it is a legendary dahlia that is really pretty. Sellwood (where the breeder lived)is a neighborhood in southeast Portland. Older small houses and you cannot afford to buy one, Margaret used to go there for her china painting class in the basement of a house. House built in the 1930s and less than 2000 square feet. House worth almost 7 figures. Good tuber of Sellwood Glory should be worth about $30.00.

Teddahlia I can't imagine I wouldn't be a little indignant about folks wanting varieties aside from my introductions. At least in your case that's not a problem anymore. I've got 19 different Hollyhill varieties going in the garden this year.

It's definitely one of the few I'd spend $30 on for either that or Ballego's Glory. I'll just pretend Ginger Clack still has all the varieties I love that I think have gone extinct growing in her garden.

He’s got groupies out there that want to grow every single one of his. I’ve got 27 varieties and another 7 that my or may not make the cut. I’m sure I’ll shoehorn them in somewhere!

The flower Purple Joy produced a seedling for us many years ago and we called it Hollyhill Joy. I have been re-selecting stock and it grew very well this past year and here is it's 2022 picture. It will be grown in greater numbers this year and we may be able to sell some stock. For many years we did not grow this one in our garden but kept only a pot tuber. That method works well and HH Chloe was brought back from the dead too and bloomed very well after 5 or so years as a pot tuber.

Teddahlia wow Ted! That purple is amazing! I’ve never been much of a purple person, but the color is particularly unique. Do you think the photo is pretty true to color? (I know color shows up differently depending on the screen, but…)

I ordered Purple Joy this year after you previously mentioned it was a good purple. I doubt I’ll like it more than HH Regal, which I love.

addicted I've seen posts in Facebook groups with people still growing it. Only Lobaugh's offered it up this year, hopefully more in the future.

addicted I lost Jennie this year; had her for years. However, my plot 'landlady' has it and we have traded it back and forth for many years - I originally gave it to her. Maybe I can get it again next fall from hers. Or even this spring - I have often had success with certain varieties taking a small 'chunk' from the side of a clump that hasn't been divided in awhile. If I get it I'll gladly share with you.

Jennie named after Phil Traff's mother who used to come to shows after he died and was a clerk. Bred from Cyril Higgo varieties by Phil Traff and Jennie was best in show at the National show.in Vancouver B.C. It was the first national show I attended. Had the kids with us and they were bored in a few minutes. Margaret and I were awe struck.

HH Joy is a large BB and is almost formal decorative and is a nice purple but not quite as nice as it's parent. I remember a garden tour person from the East coast selecting HH Joy as one of her favorites back when. Pot tubers should be covered in another thread and I do nothing extraordinary and they seldom bloom but a few do. They are obviously not grown for their blooms but are primarily my "insurance" policy for loss in the garden and for increasing stock. In the UK most every serious grower grows pot tubers.

Hapet Champagne & Nadia Ruth seem quite similar to one another. For anyone who has grown both, do you have a preference for one over the other? Which one would you consider more floriferous? Tuber increase? Better storage, by chance, one over the other? TIA...!

PegMc I’ve grown Nadia Ruth for several years, and added Hapet Champagne last year.
Other than both being laciniated, they’re quite different.

Hapet Champagne bloomed mid-season, 3.5-4’ H and very floriferous in a buff/champagne color. Tubers are long and somewhat skinny, but seem to have stored well (so far). Also had some of the prettiest immature blooms I’ve ever seen!

Nadia Ruth bloomed late (September), 4.5-5’ H and is also floriferous. Pink w/creamy center.
Easy-keeping tubers.
