A few hard frosts lately, but spring is taking hold for sure.

Krista, when you poke your finger straight down into the center of the pod and the seeds poke back at you you will know that they are growing and at least partially ripe.Once you have felt the ripening seeds it gets much easier to tell. You could use the pods you are not interested in saving as learning devices. " Get to know your seeds".

best week of the year for me this weekend through next weekend highs of 83 with a low of 56. I can not wait to do lots of weeding, I took a whole bunch of cuttings as well and those are doing good. I have a few dead trees I need to chainsaw down as well

it is very nice out. I dont like working when its 100 outside and it is never this nice this earl usually this is october weather for me.

Same here! We’re about 10 degrees cooler, but I’m looking forward to this.
Supposed to be unseasonably warm thru the end of the month.

Teddahlia I don't call temps in the 90's in mid Sept "nice"! However, I will say that it is a beautiful day.

These are my miracle dahlias: Crazy 4 Teedy and Princesse Elisabeth. Both tubers survived our
6A winter and came up on their own this year. We have a third one that probably won’t bloom.
Not sure how that happened, but fun nonetheless.

We have now made it past the date of that first frost 2 years ago that surprised us on Sept 25th and took the garden down. And tonight it is 55 degrees out so that is good. I have a lot of seed pods still working on making seeds and NO seeds left in my storage box. I cleaned it out last year. I am hoping to fill it up with new envelopes of seed this year. So far, I see NO freezing nights on the weather forecast through the next month.

And I guess ours just went to 80 like it thinks summer is just starting....Ripen seeds, ripen!

KitCMC They bumped it up to 36, so we should be okay. Hopefully that means your forecast improved, as well.
I’m in much better shape than last year. I think there’s only 5 to go that haven’t bloomed yet.
It’s supposed to rain all weekend, so they’ll be winding down anyway. I’m already thinking ahead to next year! And of course… the big dig!

Accuweather does not show a night.-time temperature under 40 degrees for us until after 4 November. Since everything is either in bags or raised beds it looks like I can take my time digging and storing this year. This is good as all efforts are going to replacing that back deck right now. We are on part 2 of 3 parts, broken down into 3 pay periods to do "pay as we go". This extends from our dIning room door out and down steps to the backyard, The 3rd section will be dealing with the old disfuntional hot tub. It has to have a certain kind of switch installed on the electric panel (The switch costs $200) and the electrical panel says not to use that kind of switch with it. Hard financial choices when you don't know that it wil be successful in the end! But the tub was "top of the line" we are told, (when it was installed).

Dark, wet , and not that cold...Today starts a long rainy spell. Maybe I better go rescue the mature seed pods..yesterday I retired to the greenhouse and shucked a bunch of pods that I had picked . It was nice and warm out there from the previous very warm (for October) days. Today I might have to close the panels on the doors to keep any remaining warmth, as the dark and rain have arrived.

calico20hill I put some of my slightly under ripe stems with seed pods into a vase with a very diluted solution of miracle grow. My rational (unproved) is the extra nutrients in the water will help feed the seed embryo and be helpful for the germination.
