A few hard frosts lately, but spring is taking hold for sure.

Sounds like all of us have had pretty hot summers. Here it's been 98 daily high for 2 weeks. With added extreme humidity. the few dahlias i have left ~ 100... are doing pretty good as they are under afternoon shade. Every time I think my lawn grass is going to die, I get rain but now its turning brown and under heat stress. I am on city water and have had 2 notices saying check if I have a water leak because the water usage is 80% higher this year lol.

I am ready for fall and cooler weather.

Watering 50% of the hanging baskets and containers took 110 minutes this afternoon. It was 104F when I finished. Margaret did her 50% at the same time. Was only supposed to be 102F.

It was a very large heat balloon. We were at 102 also. Now down to 96 and thankfully tomorrow is supposed to be cooler...Hurray! Ted and Margaret deserve a special award for preserving the decor for the dahlia tour!.

I was out messing with the Dahlias and looked up to see a spectacular sunset tonight( in Sonoma County). I didn't retouch the image except to crop out the neighbor's yard.

Bessie lovely! I can identify, I’m cropping out the neighbors yard in every photo I take.

When I am holding a flower on the plant with my hand to take a picture and it includes my fingers with my ugly nails, I spare you all and crop the picture.

Bessie Thanks, it won't be too bad here. Interestingly, the storm tracks all the way up into Montana where I hope it dumps some rain on the many forest fires in the Pacific Northwest.

SteveM for tracking fires I recently came to know a fantastic app, "Watch Duty". The day after I downloaded it I got an alert for a fire about a mile from my house. I walked to my kitchen sink to do something, looked up out the window and was startled to see dark smoke plumbing over the hills in the distance. Didn't get a Nixle alert till the fire was already put out.

Yes, that is the best app for fires, nothing else is even close. I think it is only available for the western US?

SteveM I'm not sure about availability across the U.S.. It's new to me, and I'm surprised how simple it is to use.

Wildfire smoke rolled in yesterday; this morning’s air quality index measured in the 60’s which isn’t bad. It’s gradually worsened through the day though and reading 163 now. Even during the heatwave we’ve been able to open the windows at night to cool the house down but with this smoke, we’re keeping everything buttoned up. In preparation my partner installed our window AC unit on Friday so that we won’t roast. I popped out quickly to gather a little bouquet to hold us over in case tomorrow doesn’t improve.

It was tolerable here today but we didn't spend any longer outside then we needed to. My asthma inhaler helped. I think your air may be worse then ours but this is the first time this summer where it has been apparent here I so hope it won't choke us up on our Dahlia Show tours!

I will have my very good friend that I have known since college with me. She broke her nose a week or so ago in a freak accident with a weedeater that turned on her. My knee and ankle are still swollen from falling through the deck. We are a coouple of wrecks but if we can breathe it will help!

Oh, Noni, well I’m glad to hear you both are still going to be able to make it at all and please take it easy this week! I’m really hoping for air quality improvements before the weekend too, and I can’t wait to meet new dahlia folk!

after 1 month of no rain, we finally got 2 inches of rain last night. and its its only 85 today. also getting rain thursday need all the rain we can get my grass loooks horrible very brown i have wasted more money on fescue grass seed than dahlia tubers over 10 years lol

Well, we have not had more then a thin sprinkle of rain for weeks, but we had heavy overcast the last few days and our high is only 74 degrees so far today. It is quite humid but the coolness certainly helps! I spent the morning working my way down the rows in my garden getting everything tagged and catching any that were unsupported. I still have 2 double rows to go. I am finding that many of the tubers I planted were mis-named. Disappointing when I was trying for natural pollen sharing between certain ones.
