Cabin fever time of year in the upper Midwest

SteveM I was able to speak to her this morning, and she did cut the stems down, and didn't disturb the roots. It sounds to me like she did everything you suggested. I'm sure they will all grow back. I'm know there is no way it was cold enough for the soil to freeze and I don't think it was long enough for a stem to freeze. I hope to share successful pictures of her dahlia garden in a couple of months.

Minor rain this AM. I left the tractor, riding lawn mower and electric mower outside not expecting rein. Oh well.

We have rain forecast for the next week every day. I have a few replacement tubers I need to plant but might pot up in garage. Had a few rot out from the 14 inches of rain since planting. Even with good draining dirt.

In the "almost too hot to make it" mid 80s so the sprouts will cook need them through the soil first. Glad I did not over order new tubers this year. Was digging in the crates found purple joy, allie white, and hh pdx sunset which i will use those I don't have them marked down as planted.

"...purple joy, allie white, and hh pdx sunset' We have grown all of these and I have never seen list of such different dahlias. I first saw Purple Joy(It is really purple) at the National show in the early 1990s in Vancouver B.C. The kids were with us and thought the show was the most boring thing they had ever done. I acquired Purple Joy later and we got a seedling called Hollyhill Joy that was very nice. Long gone now. Allie White was bred by a gentleman who used to send us letters listing all the varieties he had grown over the years. Never met him, but healthy stock of Allie White is an excellent white flower especially for cut flowers. And perhaps we know something about HH PDX Sunset. It is half Steve Meggos breeding. He is having the ADS National show tour at his garden this year and he has specialized in growing giant flowers and they are more giant in his garden than just about anywhere. PDX is just an "A" sized flower for most people but is a strong 6 foot grower and has really bright flowers. We collect seeds from PDX and they are wonderful seedlings and the seedlings can be very big flowers as Meggos has s bred only large flowers for many years.

This is a weather thread. Record low temp today if the forecast is right. High expected to be 58F and of course lots of rain. Dahlias all planted except for the "hospital" plants and replacements for duds.
Comment: Planting first year seedlings in hot weather is tricky and not worth doing. Lost some of those plants this year. We used to plant them a couple of weeks earlier and that was better.
We are growing this one in a pot. We need to either sell it next year or send it to the trial gardens.

52F at 11:30AM. I do not remember posting a picture of this one that is a 2023 seedling. Planted quite a bit of it this year.

You are colder then we are, Ted. Its 57 lovely wet degrees. I have happy plants this evening!

It is day 2 of temps in the mid to upper 90s here and I go outside in short 15 minute increments only except around 6 or 7am when I try to do most necessary things. Three more days of this and then it's mid to upper 80s for a while. 🥵

Mini hot spell here . Supposed to be 95 today and was about 90 yesterday and then 90 tomorrow and then high 70s for awhile. Perhaps it is summer here. That means no rain for a couple of months although once in a blue moon we might get some rain but rain would be in very small amounts . In some years we got some thunderstorms in late August but that has not happened in recent years. Rain used to start up again on September 15th each year but that is no longer a reliable date and October is more likely.

Teddahlia Our predictions are for just a few degrees cooler then you but definitely in the hot zone...And I am just getting my first dozen blooms of so. Thank goodness for the automatic watering system! And for my "Engineer" who keeps it working! Glad it is only supposed to hit the law 90's...Hopefully it won't bake my apples at the green stage on the trees like happened a few years ago when it went over 100. We are getting very gusty winds. I sure hope no one is playing with fire ......
