Teddahlia I too plant duplicate varieties in different yard locations to twart varietal extinction via gopher. Even though I've captured a few gophers, they have continued to take out about two plants a week. These are plants in plastic containers!
I rarely have as much pollen as I want. When I hand pollinate, I add each pollination entry onto the plastic tag. So, when the seedlings bloom I get to guess which of the listed pollinators most likely contributed the pollen. Knowing I'm running out of time for seed production, lately I've gone into less disciplined "mad scientist" mode where I collect pollen from several varieties and use the mix to pollinate multiple blooms of various varieties.
