I emjoyed watching Dahlia Talk tonight. It was fun to see a few of this group joining in. I felt like being incognito tonight but I thought it was well done. Good to see my old friend Steve Cox joining from Australia. He came out and spent a summer with Ken and Marilyn Walton of Narrows Dahlias. He'd come along and help with maintainance on the Test Garden at Pt Defiance Park and I was volunteering there too.

Teddahlia “secret sauce” of this method is that you are taking lots of leaf node cuttings from plants as tall as two feet. Yes, leaf cuttings are more finicky but with good care they are very productive

I need some terminology defined. How are you defining "leaf cuttings"? I call a "leaf cutting" one that is taken when a node is split in half, leaving an attached leaf, with a very small lateral, from each side of the node .For me, leaf cuttings are extremely difficult to root and I no longer use them except in special cases (saving a sport). Steve Lamb was taking what I call "lateral cuttings". These are cuttings taken from the lateral growth when it is 3 nodes long and the cutting is taken above the first node of the laterals. The first node of the lateral is left to form more laterals. Rinse and repeat. These "lateral cuttings"root extremely easily especially if the mother plant is slightly under-fertilized. This is the method I use on the mother plants I grow year-round. e.g., I have a couple of HH Peachy Keen mother plants that are now one year old and are producing many cuttings.

SteveM Steve showed some pictures of the plants that may well have been as you describe. I personally have grown a plant tall and cut it up into true leaf cuttings and got good results although it takes a week or two longer to get them to size. His process needs to be started months before the normal starting time for pot tubers and considerable grooming of the plant is done. The method is a good one for large scale cutting production. Most of us just need a few cuttings for the the garden and one or two for pot tubers and all of this "production" method is overkill.

Dick Parshall on the 15 year seeds sprouting very interesting. I have done freezer seeds for tomatoes / pepper but never dahlia seeds, I just keep those in the fridge crisper drawer. I might test this out next year.

Maybe someone could talk about dahlia meristem tissue culture next? All the cool kids seem to be doing tissue culture for rare house plants or certain "life-style" plants in their kitchens now.

" Meristem cuttings are not for beginners and perhaps someone has successfully done it recently. A post came to me a year or so ago and the person was doing meristem cuttings(in her home) on chrysanthemums to clean up virus. I do not know what her exact subject was for her PhD.

Hello, would it be acceptable to offer tubers here that I ordered too many of? I'll wait until the tubers have been delivered and I have them in hand but this will mean they won't be coming from my own garden. I'll be happy to disclose the source for viz of course.

I can't find which threat I was talking about my River's Order on yesterday and I was offered a cutting from River's Rosie.
Well, Apparently River's Rosie is coming to me from RIver's Dahlias today! Rosie asked me what was on my list that failed to go through and she apparently found a couple of them still available. I had told her I did not mind what the tuber looked like as long as it had a live sprout starting to happen! I am also getting River's Tangy Tart and River's Ruby so that just leaves the Chocolate one and And the Uncle Ted ones on my "Really WANT" list for this year.

Uncle Ted ( I am the Uncle Ted) has been slow to show an eye. It is a seedling of HH Renoir which in turn is a seedling of the famous dahlia from the 1960s Nagel's Solidite. It was a premier show (IC like Cotton Candy)flower with somewhat poor tubers. Eugene Kenyon wrote a note with the tuber saying that one of his favorites when he first started growing dahlias was HH Renoir. So he named one after me. Not some name like, Ted's Choice or Ted' Wonder or Ted's Best of All but Uncle Ted. I am still flattered. .

I wondered if by any chance you were the Uncle Ted?!. I loved HH Renoir back when I had it. Actually,I love all the incurved cactus ones but it was one of the first that I really loved.

Krista I just fixed the DM issue, so thank you! And, believe it or not, I just opened an order that I placed from The Flowering Farmhouse, and I found a Sugartown Sunrise. I completely forgot that I ordered it! I am one of those unfortunate people who let the boxes stack up and sit for a week before opening 🙃 I have a few more boxes to open, I wonder what other treasures I will find😆 I hope you find a home for the Sugartowns, sorry about the mix up!
