  • 2024 - Dahlia Blooms

Margaret picture taken with her Googlepix 8. I only have a model 6 that looks like it was run over by a truck. .

I think there was talk of orange blooms. This was a local society trade, and is an intensely saturated orange dahlia. Improved Orange Cushion. I tried to take a picture outside, but it always looked red. Here it is on the garage floor in a plastic cup—a truly special presentation.

Looks a lot like Vesuvius, the brightest orange dahlia I have ever seen.

Out of the 100 seedlings I grew there were 3 ( don’t have a great pic of the 3rd one that doesn’t have water drops or bug bites out of it) that I thought were pretty good. Now I am not very good at judging a dahlia on form ect so I welcome any feedback good or bad on them. First pic has various stages of it in bloom with some of them showing it over ripe with the pollen centers visible

Flower Two: Lavender is beautiful color and there are not enough of these "light purple" and sometimes "blue pink" flowers and those terms are for people who do not know the color lavender. In the show criteria, color is judged by it's even application and extra points are given for color that is not blotchy. A blend of colors to make a light blend or dark blend needs to have a demarcation between the colors an even distribution within the color. Pictures taken late in the season are not good in that flowers change so much in the cool weather. Form is another matter and although petal count is not a judging criteria , lower petal count flowers are less likely to have enough depth. Also the larger petals are less likely to placed in a regular manner throughout the bloom.
Flower One:
The picture of three flowers shows a dark blend that is not very blotchy but there are some streaks. In this pose judging the flower is difficult as one cannot see depth or look at the flower from the side. If there is dark pigment on the reverse of the florets, that would be a plus.

So here is a side view of flower one. I hesitated to put it on because the angle I took the pic I thought made the center look like it’s not evenly centered when in reality it is. Looking back this is the only side view pic I have of it tho.

I'm guessing this is a 3-4" bloom. I feel the color is unique enough to grow it again and evaluate it as a commercial cut variety.

Not my photos or my garden, but a friend sent me these photos of her Verrone's Jeannie and I was so interested in a Verrone variety I hadn't heard of.

I finished sending in photos for the PSDA and ADS photo competitions. It's my first year submitting. It was kind of fun to pick out and edit these.

I didn't submit this one because it doesn't show the whole flower, but I liked Normandie Memories quite a bit.

bloomhjelm the ADS photo contest is also on my evening to do list! Next year I will get an ADS family membership because my husband isn’t a dahlia fanatic but does like to take their photographs. We had a lot of fun photographing dahlias together this summer. Half the photos I took he would say “poor framing” or “distracting background” 😂. But I think I managed some photo contest worthy shots by the end of the season. I saw this year it said NOT to label photos. Did you put any description of the flowers names in the email text? Or do we just assume the judges know the flower variety already? Or does it not matter until they choose it then they will ask?

I don't believe you have to be an ADS member to enter photographs. You have to be a member to vote.

(This is how it was two years ago, I haven't researched to see if it changed)
