Sir Joseph Paxton is the most famous dahlia person you have not heard of. He wrote a dahlia book in the 1830s and was not really famous for dahlias. He was knighted by Queen Victoria for his work designing and building the Chrystal Palace, the site of the first world's fair called the Great Exposition of 1851. The building at that time was the biggest in the world. I named a nice dahlia after him and I am waiting for confirmation from a psychic to hear whether he likes it. It is a cactus type dahlia and there were none in existence in his lifetime. They came over from the Americas in about 1876 and he was long dead by then.

Teddahlia Great memories of some of the Hollyhill dahlias that I have grown as I explored and learned about them. I've downsized so much to make room for growing out seedling now, but I hope I have captured genetics from some of them to build on. And even then, ones I no longer grow are special to my memories of them. I still grow more HH Dahlias then any other named varieties.

We’ve been up north of Leavenworth for the weekend and came home to find Clearview Leroux throwing this amazing 1/2 & 1/2 variegated first bloom. It’s choked down into the plant so a good deep cut once it’s fully open should get those stems cranking out again, long and strong like last year.

That’s a beautiful photo! I’ve really enjoyed HH PDX Sunset this year, but every time I take a photo I feel like it doesn’t capture its beauty. Love your photo though!

Hollyhill Pink Cadillac. I grew this one two years ago and lost it, but conveniently my dad didn’t, so I got to tuber shop in his garage this year.

Third time’s the charm for Hollyhill Tangelo. First year my tuber rotted, second year I wound up with stock that bloomed all open-centered. Excited to have lovely stock this year!

Hilltop Dagwood is another one I’ve been trying for for a while now. Very lovely.

I would like more people to grow HH Pink Cadillac as it is a very nice pink flower and is about 8 inches in diameter.

Thanks for the pictures, Ted. I somehow accidently turned off my ability to post photos and can't find the secret passageway. I know what I was doing was trying to download and post and it kept giving me multiple of the same one, so yes, I was a bit annoyed when I turned it off! I'll see if some "kid tech" can help me find my way back. I have so many seedlings I really like this year and would be glad to share their pics!

I am just happy to have blooms this year. I have some deadheading to do lol left for 4 days and lots of blooms for almost end of Aug. I lost only 8 plants to root rot. ZERO losses to Voles / Moles this year so the 3 gallon sink pots worked perfect with 1/4 inch hardware cloth.

One thing I would change is pull more dirt up around almost like hilling potatoes, till they got established plants the heat from the black plastic had a few wilted but overall very pleased.

JessieC Thanks! it was a lot of work and cost me extra money replacing 80% of my tubers + the pots and hardware cloth but worth it after seeing the blooms and healthy plants.

If this had failed again I was just going to take a 2 year break from growing dahlias 🤣 i can't afford to spend $1,000 a year on replacement tubers lol
