Krista Adding a not great photo of the only plant I have blooming in Seattle. I didn’t dig this one last year and expected to lose “Blown Dry” but she made it through the winter and decided to come up again after all. Her foliage looks questionable and this flower doesn’t seem to have the same yellow ombré effect that I’m seeing online — not sure if it’s temps/soil/broken down genetics but I’m enjoying her regardless.
calico20hill calico20hill Having trouble posting. I think I turned something off and now don't know how to fix it to share my pics. Frustrating!
Krista calico20hill Oh dear, if so love to see your seedling photo! I hope you can get a reset so you can upload images again. I wanted to share another photo of this bloom, the color in the center has changed quite a bit in the vase!
MissyWeitzel Appaloosa I am hoping to get the next blooms in time for our WMDS show next weekend. Just in case that doesn't work out, I snipped this one and put it in a hydration chamber in the fridge and I'll put it on a hairclip and wear it to the show.
bloomhjelm MissyWeitzel I just love Appaloosa. I hoped to get it this year but got some other Iler's intros instead: Abbey, Celeste, Fresh Burst, Daisy Adair, TicToc.
Bessie Hollyhill Pandora again defies the environment in my yard and is blooming nicely. I really need to improve my labeling... This was marked as a saved tuber of Hollyhill Snowdrop 😖
calico20hill It is cool indeed! I seem to have locked myself out of posting pics and can't figure out how to unblock it. So frustrating as I have some awesome ones this season! Until I can figure it out, I am posting them on facebook.
JessieC Juliarugula Your Hollyhill blooms are amazing! I want to add so many for next year. I overdid it with Ball and mini ball types this year 🟡🟣🟠 Teddahlia I love the story of Paxton, and I do know who he was. A fitting tribute to a true innovator.
Teddahlia HH Angela is named after Margaret's niece. Tiger Rose is a street name . Lawrence is the name of the father of Margaret's friend. Serenity is the movie. Pinkie was the Pinkie of the Bucky and Pinkie who were fraternal twins in our neighborhood. Black Beauty is the most obviously stolen name of the horse in the book. I wanted to name a nice pink one Barbie but the Boleys named their nice one Barbie. Exotica was used as the flower is wildly colored.
Juliarugula Teddahlia what do you mean by “street name”? Was it a sport of Pink Tigress and people just started calling it Tiger Rose? I’m really enjoying HH Lawrence - what a fun flower!
Juliarugula Also, full disclosure - this one has blown its center and you can’t see it. But look how deep it is! HH Sir J Paxton.
Teddahlia Tiger Rose : “street name”? The name of a country lane a few miles from us. Saw the sign and read it out loud to Margaret. The flower is a seedling of Pink Tigress.
Teddahlia Sir Joseph Paxton is the most famous dahlia person you have not heard of. He wrote a dahlia book in the 1830s and was not really famous for dahlias. He was knighted by Queen Victoria for his work designing and building the Chrystal Palace, the site of the first world's fair called the Great Exposition of 1851. The building at that time was the biggest in the world. I named a nice dahlia after him and I am waiting for confirmation from a psychic to hear whether he likes it. It is a cactus type dahlia and there were none in existence in his lifetime. They came over from the Americas in about 1876 and he was long dead by then.
calico20hill Teddahlia Great memories of some of the Hollyhill dahlias that I have grown as I explored and learned about them. I've downsized so much to make room for growing out seedling now, but I hope I have captured genetics from some of them to build on. And even then, ones I no longer grow are special to my memories of them. I still grow more HH Dahlias then any other named varieties.
