I was an auctioneer last night at our Portland Dahlia Society tuber sale and auction. We are temporally meeting in a much smaller building and so they voted to exclude the general public and the sale was for members only. They checked the people a the door. Since our club has over 500 members the sale went very well and will be followed by another sale next month.
There were 150 auction items and some included multiple tubers. Probably the best deal of the night was when 8 buyers were allowed to purchase for $10- , My Hero, the giant purple dahlia from Swan Island that they sell for $29.95 and have been sold out for a long time. On the other side, a few items went for just over $100.00
I am allowed to bid but only bid on two and was able to purchase The Boley's Barbie for $20.00. It reminds me of HH Cotton Candy in the pictures and I hope it grows well.
The last auction item was Vesuvius and I got to tell the classic Vesuvius tale to the audience. Because we had so many auction items I could not " tell tales" during the sale and I was limited to "one liners" .
Yes, the Hollyhill new intros went for nice money and I believe an HH Cheers donated by another trustworthy person was the high seller at just over $100.00. I was ready to bid $20.00 on Marston Lilac and it went for over $50.00 and I dropped out. I like it's color and form.
