First to bloom seedlings May 21st to May 25th. I don't think there are any keepers here, but I'll wait and observe for a while. I do like the ruffled petals...

SteveM Thanks Steve! I haven’t grown Camano Cloud. This is actually one of my favorite seedlings. When the second bloom came I was super disappointed because it was all white. The next time I looked at it it has that pale blush skirt again but stayed white at the center. So strange. Like magic 😁

Camano Cloud lives in a special place in our memory cells. It was almost a Cafe au Lait color in a real show flower. I saw it win a best in show award many years ago. It was one of the first unicorns as it would sort of make tubers but only enough to tease you into thinking you were going to be able to grow it another year and for whatever reason you lose it. One clever person did the primitive version of growing it as a pot tuber but without the pot and did not divide the first year clump and then getting some larger tubers the second year. People search for the color of Cafe au Lait without success and to some extent it is the same for Camano Cloud.

This 2023 second year seedling is nothing to be proud of in the vigor department, but it finally threw it's first flower of the season. Hollyhill Donnatella, which is limping along and equally unvigorous this year, is the seed parent. I don't think I started my tubers early enough and definitely didn't fertilize enough!

I have a beautiful seedling but getting the photo to show it the way I see it is technically too much challenge! It is Salish Golden West and it came from my Salish Berries Au Lait line. THe real color is a soft golden yellow without any pink or bright yellow showing...just a soft color like a summer afternoon...

Salish Golden West is about 5-6" in diameter and has lots and lots of petals. I would say that the side profile is about 2" deep and the centers still have a nice supply of petals to unfold. It also comes with a long strong stem. This is the 3rd year for this seedling and it will be going on to Triple Wren.

This seedling has lots and lots of petals. If left to go to seed till the center ever opens the back petals are pushing on the opposite sides petals because there is nowhere for em to go anymore.

All these seedlings I sent pics of this morning originated from the same seed parent. There were more absolutely beautiful colors( peach , orange , and white) but blown centers.

BackyardBouquets_17 Your seedlings have large florets and I bet the seed parent does too. Your first one would do well if crossed with a nice waterlily as large florets are a real asset for a waterlily. It does have a very magical light lavender color.

2nd bloom 1st year seedling. Ferncliff Dolly seed parent. The first bloom had a 9th petal and a couple deep petal splits so this 2nd bloom is definitely an improvement. The red streaks make it pretty cool in my opinion. The petal overlapping may be an issue. I have over 20 named collarettes growing and even some of the ones that routinely win at shows don't have perfect petal overlapping right now in my garden either, so maybe that is something that changes with weather, stress or other environmental factors. Or maybe this just isn't a keeper.
I'm bringing it to the Midwest show this weekend because they have a section for year 1 seedlings where you can get feedback from judges on whether to keep a seedling or not. I'm hoping to get some feedback that will help me should I continue to still try to grow a lot of collarette seedlings in the future. One pic with me shading it and one pic in full sun.

MissyWeitzel I had some single type dahlia seedlings I grew this year and I noticed the number of petals would be sometimes 8 sometimes 9 on the same plant. Not very consistent. Really confused me since I didn’t know if that meant it just wasn’t a good plant/good genes (my guess is this is why), or if it was due to the season time/conditions or if this is a “thing” in open center singles or if this happens in open center seedlings. Open center types are not as popular so not as many people could tell me about the expected outcomes of this kind of seedling. Thats very cool about the seedling bench to get feedback on if it’s a keep vs toss since an outside perspective is helpful. My first single type dahlia grown from tuber bloomed finally. I will have to post a photo of it because the petal alignment looks “off” to me but maybe that is because I am not used to this variety or seeing it for the first time

Eight petals are preferred but perfectly spaced 9 petal flowers occasionally win. In collarettes the collar petals must be the right size and length too. Too fluffy or too long or too short is a problem. The back petals on a collarette need to lay on a flat plane and be spaced well with no gaps.

My anemone is still small but not micro. It's also not fully mature but I cut it anyway so I can bring it to that 1st year seedling evaluation at the midwest show this weekend. Pretty sure my collarette will be a big loser and all the named anemones I see are all over the place so I have no idea what the judges will say about it. I'm just excited to learn more!

Anemone is a strange class. These flowers have two types of petals, the normal ray florets and the disc florets that are actually around the reproductive parts in the center of the flower. The ADS has declared that anemones must have tubular shaped disc florets and if the flower has flat disc florets it is not a show flower. However, most of us like the beauty of the flowers with flat or open florets at the center. People call them powder puff dahlias. Pretty is not in the ADS list of traits and pretty powder puff dahlias are not in the shows. Makes no sense to me.

The picotee edged seedling that Ted commented looked like it would be a stellar, and hoped it would hold its center seems to have done both. I really like this one - hope the tubers store well and I don’t have troubles with the “purple dahlia curse”. It unfortunately hasn’t been a heavy bloomer, and some of the blooms have been pretty messy. We’ll see…
