calico20hill I received my North Cascades order last week. Unfortunately sent me someone else's order, however, I notified them and they immediately (like the same day) shipped my real order including freebies of BQ Compare and BQ Loud, as well as a free return label so they can recover the incorrect tubers. I appreciated that very much.

I have also had about a 98% awesome tuber rate. The rare exceptions were refunded. Almost no cancelled tubers either. I was especially impressed with BJ's Dahlias. Jim shipped three very large and double-tubered KA's Khaleesis I ordered back in the fall.

Yes, it is the North Cascades order and each one has a nice little sprout on it.

Received my tubers from Cowlitz River Dahlias. They are by far the best tubers of all the many orders I placed this year. Teresa does an awesome job!

Unfortunately, my most expensive order recently arrived with very sub par tubers - one was extremely smooshy with a blackened growth tip and another, even more expensive tuber, has extensive blackening on the entire top portion of growth. So disappointing.

Teresa was one of the first "Dahlia People" I met at the earlier Portland Dahlia National Show I went to and one of my first mentors. She should get to wear a tiara with glowing lights in all the dahlia colors!

It should be about time for me to stop shopping "openings," but was still a little dejected to miss the beautiful local master gardener/hybridizer and Mother's Day sales I know are open this weekend. There is a nice cutting sale in Covington, something in Kitsap and Connells is having a plant sale. Ironically, I am missing the Mother's Day activities because I am solo parenting my four kids and they are very bad companions for doing grown-up shopping. What do I even want at this point? Anything I haven't seen before I suppose.

bloomhjelm I’m solo parenting this weekend too, but my kids are teens now so it isn’t too rough. Those younger years are intense though.

I never can think of any good suggestions for my kids to get me. I think this year I’m going to put teen boy energy to work and have them dig up all the ugly pachysandra in a neglected garden bed so I can do something more interesting with it. Not sure what yet. It’s against the north face of the house, so not really an ideal location. Hydrangeas maybe.

I vote yes on the hydrangeas! SO many fabulous colors of blooms and nice bouquets that keep over the winter. I especially love the ones that go through awesome color changes in the Autumn. And in your location I bet you get some beautiful blues on the acid loving kind? I just about cried when my beautiful blue ones turned muddy pink purples down here in Oregon! Now I add aluminum sulfate along with nitrogen fertilizer ...and I need to get to that!

I only have 1 more order to get my 2nd order from Cowiltz. I will email her next weekend if I have not gotten it by then. Still planting out tubers. I will have a full garden this summer. Hopefully I do never have to replace all my tubers again lol.

Virgil's Dahlias has some dahlias available for sale. I purchased last year. Unless someone tells me I should have one of these dahlias ( because they make seed), I will restrain from ordering. I do have Hollyhill Black Beauty, but none of the others.

Portland Dahlia Society meeting and auction last night. I was the auctioneer for nearly two hours and our other auctioneer was unavailable. Bargains on top of bargains. Sold some for one dollar. Many for $2- and lots and lots of scarce varieties for $5.00. I do not believe anything went for more than $40.00. I actually bid on three items but it is not fair to the auctioneer as that just gets the crowd to bid more than I will pay. One of those successful bidders felt sorry for me, and said that he will give me a cutting(next year).

I donated a foot tall cutting of HH Pink Cadillac and it went for about $12.00. I love that old time flower and it is the one on the right in this picture of it and some named and un-named Hollyhill flowers.

I watched on line last night and could not believe how low spirited it all was. Is the dahlia madness subsiding? Or just everyone tired from planting out what they have? With planting space so limited it would have taken something very special to get me bidding on it if I had been there.

I'm glad my sales are wrapping up.

I'm a little disappointed in seeing so many people selling tubers for $2-4 dollars already. (Not grab bags of named or unnamed tubers, but named you pick tubers).

The earlier this is done, buyers will hold off of they know they can purchase in May. Also, i would nkt be a happy person to see a tuber I paid $25 for last month marked down 40% this month from the same seller.

Society sales used to be the best deal around until after Memorial Day.

Not everyone is a hobby grower, and these low prices are not competitive, but hurtful. One can hardly pay cc / PayPal fees and taxes on $2 tubers.

I would be interested how many sellers were active and their sell-out rates this year. The variety and duration of the sales season has been incredible. Then I think the abundance of Coseytowns and Bloomquists this year means each of those varieties probably sold through less.

It looks like the changes in the market have made some varieties fetch much higher prices, but the workhorses of cut flower production may have declined in value. With the increase of cut flower production, so many more people are growing rows of varieties like Cornel that there may be more supply than demand on the tuber side.

blown_dry definitely the case! Last season it was easy to sell all my Cornel Bronze tubers. This season I grew fewer myself and listed fewer tubers but they took forever to sell out.

Mr. Kennedy, I noticed Virgil's Dahlias was selling Hollyhill Gold Rush but I don't see many search results about it. Anything you can tell me about it?
