Hollyhill Black Beauty or Hollyhill Black Magic? Without knowing the size, they look similar this rime of year. Whether it's the autumn weather, cool nights, or shorter days, the form has changed. This is HH Black Magic bundled for market.

I cannot compare Black Beauty to Black Magic as we only planted a few tubers of Black Beauty and they have not yet bloomed or worse we lost it. I bet I find it when we finish our "dahlia cruise" when we check the tags. Lots of Black Beauty seedlings in the first, second and third year seedlings. On the ADS breeding seminar two of the panel members recommended Black Beauty as a good seed parent. It is a blank palette and can yield numerous dahla forms if crossed with that form. Probably that is because the florets are fairly flat and the genes for cactus or semi cactus can easily take over. Same for formal decorative form. Waterlily, somewhat.

At the trial garden in Canby, several entries came up sick and were culled. Rather than having empty spots in the garden Linda Taylor contacted Swan Island as they were selling some potted dahlia plants . She was able to select some really nice plants of several varieties and she used Clearview Jonas to replace an "A" entry. The Jonas plants grew like gangbusters and many visitors to the trial garden asked what was that variety. Since it was not entered she pointed at the plant tag below the plants and Linda iguesses that Clearview Jonas may be sold out by now. Swan Island's Wildcat also looked really good and it was one of the late Marge Gitts 's favorites.

Teddahlia this is the second year growing Clearview Jonas in my garden. The plant(needs pinching) and flowers are exceptional. Last year there were lots of blooms, but no seeds. This year I'm excited that at least one seed pod feels like it has seed.

Ferncliff Dolly is one of the prettiest collarettes I've seen. It's also quite large. Here it is with one of my (as my husband jokingly but accurately refers to them as) man hands.

I agree. Long stems, floriferous, and holds up well to rain.
April Heather is another I’d like to try, but curious if it would be as good?

MissyWeitzel Ferncliff Dolly is stunning. I can’t believe how large it is! I didn’t grow anything open-faced in my garden this year because I thought I might want to save seed and try seedlings. But I think I’ve changed my mind about trying seedlings, so maybe I need to think about her next year…

My Bloomquist Jean plant is huge and the blooms look nothing like what I had on my puny plant last year. I love it.

Juliarugula I just cut back or cover all my open center ones before I start letting blooms mature for pollination! 😊

MissyWeitzel I’ve really just had to put my foot down and face the fact that I don’t have enough space to grow both the varieties I’d like to grow and also seedlings.

I just added in two vegetable beds because my family has been complaining that I didn’t grow veggies this year. So maybe in a couple of years, they’ll get bored of tomatoes again and I can convert those to seedling beds. 🤣🤣🤣

Barbarry Dominion is one of the very oldest Barbarrys and dates to 1988. We grew it in about 1993. Pretty flower. It may be the oldest Barbarry variety. I love Barbarry Red Dwarf and it was introduced in 2000.
