AndreaB I couldn't help but do a Google lens search... Lovely Lana or Formby Monarch is what it looks most like to me.

Bessie I actually think it looks just like every photo I’ve seen of Lovely Lana. But I’ve never grown or ordered that one (same for Formby Monarch). This guy grew out of one of my aisles, so I’m assuming it’s from a previous year and not just an mis-id from this year’s plants.

It’s big. I haven’t groomed it at all, but maybe 7” diameter?

Oh, but it doesn’t look like Andrea’s though! (I was working from memory there…)

Definitely not Lovely Lana. My first bloom just opened a couple days ago.

Another possibility is that it is a seedling from last year's blooms/seed pods. I get a couple of self-seeded seedlings every year and they briefly fool me and make me think I am losing my mind. Usually, they are not very well-formed blooms but occasionally I will get a rogue keeper. If it is a seedling there will be no mother tuber in the clump when you dig it. (That doesn't mean every clump without a mother tuber is a seedling).

This did briefly occur to me, but I hadn’t heard anyone mention dahlias self-sowing before, so I assumed it was pretty rare.

AndreaB I’ve never grown either of those either. 🤷‍♀️

I’m hoping maybe I’ll get another bloom or two - maybe that will give me some clues.

I'm at a friend's house ... these are from one plant in her yard, about 5-6" blooms. Name of variety?

One of the Star cactus dahlias. Google "Star cactus dahlia" and look at images.

Teddahlia thanks for the tip! I think the name of the Dahlia is Kiev. This Dahlia was so beautiful, and to see an entire vase full from just one plant was really surprising.

From the pictures Kiev is a semi cactus and this one is very cactus.
