I want to second @mr_blown_dry as far as inviting people to create new threads. I know I opened a lot in the beginning to get it going, but I'm very happy to see other avatars next to the discussions. But stakes are low.

I must be doing something wrong, hoping for help creating a private discussion. For some reason, I was unable to add a user when I tried to create one with @calico20hill. Here are my screenshots to help identify where I went wrong:

You aren't blocked specifically, Noni has turned on, possibly by accident, "Block private discussions." Neither of us was seeing the problem because users can't block private discussions from Admins.

You can enable them again, if you like.

Go to your Settings:
Scroll down to Privacy and turn off the "Block private discussions" toggle switch:

If you have trouble, let me know, it looks like I can change it by directly editing your user account in the database.

I'm not sure what is wrong. It is working for me. Maybe mouse over or hold down on her user icon and select the three dots in the right corner to start a discussion that way. That will remove the search aspect.

Somebody asked about inviting people to join the forum and/or advertising that the forum exists. I am fine with it. I think we picked up 10 people from the podcast where it was mentioned. I don't have ambitions about growing it, but don't have ambitions about locking it down either. The CUBITS forum was always visible to the public and anyone could join (though the site's inability to send email curtailed that the last few years I think).

I wonder if something changed with Noni's profile when the spelling of her handle was updated. I guess that wouldn't account for why it's only me having this issue.

Krista If you click on her avatar icon and go to her profile page, do you have the "Private Discussions" menu option?

mr_blown_dry I don't, but when clicking on all other users' avatars, I can successfully select the "controls" menu option to send a message. On mobile, the three dots menu is missing only from calico20hill's profile for me, all others are operating as by design.

I wonder if Noni accidentally 'muted' you specifically in some way? That would explain why you can open discussions with others and others with her. I poked around and can't find the ability to mute or block another user. Maybe @mr_blown_dry will know.

Ohhh ok, glad to know the “why” in case this is a setting Noni is interested in updating, great sleuthing! That being said, we were able to connect through messenger so no need to pursue this from my end. Thank you for taking so much time with this, @"mr_blown_dry" and @"blown_dry"#!

I had no idea I had anything turned off. I have to admit I am old enough that I am amazed what all my kids know about using computers and feel a bit hopeless to catch up. On the other hand, I just want to communicate how ever it works. If I have anything else set wrong for communicating please clue me in if you see it. I'll get around the system but in my own 🙃 timid timing. Now if it was a sewing machine...pre-computerized, I could direct you all step by step!

Noni, there's some hilarious videos online where teens are trying to figure out how to use a rotary phone.

SteveM I can imagine, LOL. Its nice to have kids though to teach one the new technologies but then the kids grow up and leave home...and they get so annoyed and roll their eyes at you after a while. It is a good thing I have other skills to compensate with.....Actually my kids are pretty good about helping if I can catch one of them long enough for a teaching session....Once we get past the eye rolling......

calico20hill Sadly, from what a lot of my older clients tell me, it's not at all unusual for the kids, especially adult kids, to be very impatient when helping their relations with technology struggles.
