MissyWeitzel Well Mr. Boley got back to me super quickly and basically said Irish Blackheart has never sported and that this dahlia does not look like anything they have. So I guess I just have a random creamy white mislabeled variety. Ahhh well.
SteveM Irish Blackhart sports readily (for me), mostly to a solid red with varying degrees of white florets. I almost prefer the mutated novelty over the perfect color symmetry of the "true" Blackhart (although both are stunning). Last year all 50 of my Irish Blackhart plants sported, mostly to red with varying degrees of white but some predominately white with a few red florets. It appears my original mother plant is still true. I notice a few vendors are only offering a sported version for sale. ( e.g., https://chelanbuttedahliary.com/product/irish-blackhart/ ) If possible, I would source it from the Boleys if I wanted the original.
MissyWeitzel SteveM thank you for your response! I'd love to see a picture of your sported ones if you have one. 😊
calico20hill I would source it from the Boley's and also hang onto the cream sport. The cream sport would be lovely for cut flowers,,,much easier to work with then one with contrasting colors. It could be interesting to back cross them and see what you get.
MissyWeitzel calico20hill Great idea, thank you! I am so curious now if any of the red will show up later in the season. I'll take a nicer picture when the blooms are fully open and post it in a couple days. I definitely will try to order Irish Blackheart from Birch Bay next season, as well as every other waterlily they have that I should have ordered this past year. 😊
Krista Wondering if anyone knows anything about the referenced “DVD Tel with David Boyd, Roger Turrell, Derek Hewlett and Robin Pearce” mentioned in this thread and whether it’s available anywhere still?

Bessie I've got a Dahlia(cutting I think) that is obviously mislabeled. My best guess is it's Hollyhill Black Widow. I don't have a reference bloom yet to compare to. This first bloom is about 5", with strong, slightly red stems. About 3' tall at this point, and a beautiful stocky plant. Ideas?
NCDahlia yes its a WL. And the above to me does not look like black widow. believe ted said black widow was before black beauty but he can correct me if wrong https://hollyhilldahlias.aroundbeantown.com/HHVarieties/BlackWidow.html
Teddahlia Black Widow was released long before Black Beauty and they are probably not very related to each other. My picture in the link you posted is what it looks like. It has more rounded tips than your flower. It also sports to a maroon purple and that is irrelevant to this discussion. I do not recognize your flower. 2021 seedling of Black Beauty and it looked nice this year.
Bessie Teddahlia thanks Ted for the confirmation. I guess I'll have to wait until some of the dahlias bloom, and then to figure this out. It's definitely not what's labeled, Hollyhill Lilibet.😳 I have that blooming and know what it looks like.
MissyWeitzel Does anyone know if two dahlias exist, both a Clearview Mick and a Clearview Mick S? Or are they one in the same? My friend gave tubers to me and called them Clearview Mick. ADS lists a CV Mick as a B ID PR, which fits. Then I also find pictures of a CV Mick S online that looks like what I have.
MissyWeitzel We had a really nice West Michigan Dahlia Society show last weekend. Some exhibitors that bring a lot of flowers to our show went to nationals so we weren't sure how it would go, but it turned out great and very well attended. My Baron Ron entry made the head table as Best stellar but didn't get a very good picture. 😊 Here are some other standout entries from other growers: The King of the show was also the largest bloom of the show, a particularly perfect and beautiful Aggie White at 14". Winholme Diane is definitely on my wishlist now! And Sir Richard really caught my eye. My goal is to someday feel confident enough to do a floral arrangement entry but it didn't happen this year. There were some really beautiful entries in the theme of the gardens who host our show, dahlias for dinner, etc. The last picture was the one that went to the head table as best arrangement and my pic doesn't do it justice. She made the bridge out of plant material and it looks just like the bridge in by the koi garden area. Very cool!
AndreaB MissyWeitzel Thanks for posting, Missy. I wondered how your show went. I’m not familiar with Baron Ron, but it’s another beautiful Stellar. Congrats! Oh… and that Aggie White. Wow.
Krista MissyWeitzel Wow congrats on your head table win! I love seeing the arrangements that show up. Your show had some great ones!
