No field dahlias for me this year. I have never had the voles, moles / gophers this bad. Every time i replant a replacement tuber, 2-5 days later it gets eaten. Have now had multiple 8 inch tall plants collapse, I dig them up and there's bits of tuber left.
I do still have extras of 75% of my prized ones - I will try to salvage tubers for next year growing in 7 gallon grow bags. Having tubers eaten by voles / gophers is a worse feeling than losing them to spring rain rot.
Other than that the ones that are growing are thriving. I just don't know if they will make it to 2 feet before the voles get them. Unsure if switching over the cuttings the same result would happen but I am tempted to do that next year.
Hope everyone is having a better start to the season. June 15 for field grown my area is just too hot to expect a sprout to work.
