This starts a really crazy week for us....Howard has surgery on Friday and our son on Tuesday. And I don't drive in the city so our daughter will be helping with transport for some of it. And I think our nephew has volunteered as a back up.
Our son was born with a rare genetic difference that means his muscles are not strong... which meant that his family placed him in an orphanage when he was born with signs of the condition. (He was their 3rd child born with it.) We adopted him at age 5 and I spent what seemed like years with him at Children's Hospital. It wasn't an easy childhood but Drs were able to do an amazing transformation for him. Now in mid life some of those muscles have split and caused a hernia, which no one thought to worn us about 30 years ago....so the surgery should not be difficult and does need to be done, but I am feeling a bit overwhelmed with both my guys down and out and needing care! The good news is that neither surgery is difficult or rare and they should recover well and be better off afterward.
Husband found the dahlia digging was too much for him today so I told him we could just wait to do the last double row until he has recovered...in fact, they would probably be fine left in the ground. I think we have all the 1st, 2nd and 3rd year seedlings up and most of the tubers left in the ground are replaceable, or extra seedlings that I have some saved from other rows. So I still have another day of dividing what was already dug, and then packing it all away for the winter. Still no hard frost here and a ton of rain about to fall on us...(maybe) but as long as we don't get into the deep freeze things should be fine. If you don't hear from me I am probably shuttling my patients from country to city or vice versa...or more likely from home to our rather poor metro service. Sometimes that means driving them 20 miles to a metro pic-up/drop off site half way to Portland.
