100F here in Oregon today and forecast is same or hotter tomorrow. Dahlia maintenance is at stands till and watering is all we are doing.

Teddahlia I'm trying to focus on breeding for cut flower dahlias. However, I love growing for seeds! I'm happy to take Dahlia breeding requests 😄. Send me two plants, and I'll send you the resulting seeds. I'm on "bee duty" every day I'm home during blooming season.

Bessie my happy place is shucking seeds. I should be out digging dahlias, but I justify collecting seedpods since it will start raining in 36 hours. The big paper napkin is seed (24106) from 15 seed pods, with an average of 14.6 seeds per pod.
Many more pods still ripening on the plant.

Bessie I LOVE shucking dahlia seeds and am sad I already did all mine this year. 😄

I picked 5 seed pods today. I checked about 40 pods before finding that many with seeds. Peak seed gathering time here was about October 15th.

SteveM Another cloudy night here and no extra colors playing in it when either Howard or I checked last night. Not that I had high hopes, but still, I would like to have seen it.

Glorious! I had a look out here but there was nothing to see from our house. We are down in a little valley with a bit of a hill to the north side. If we see even a hint of color we can drive out and up the hill around the corner, but so far, not even a hint in the northern sky. We'll see what tonight brings.

Here in central WI this was early this morning. To cloudy last night to see them but when I got up at 5 to make hubby his breakfast before he left for work they were still putting on a show. Supposed to be able to see them again tonight.

It’s been pouring rain all morning, which isn’t common in my neck of the woods. I lifted my last clump yesterday though, and I’m happy for its arrival. Beginning the dividing process indoors today with the sound of rain outside, and a warm cup of coffee sure feels cozy.

THe rain hit here sometime around 3 and it got very dark...I was out in the greenhouse splitting more tuber clumps and it is rather fun being in there when the rain pours down! That storm didn't last long but who knows what tonight will bring.

Still no frost here yet. It has gotten close and I expect that it will frost(not a hard frost) in the next few days. All the dahlias have been dug and this is a typical year where we have dug them before frost. It is a myth that you should dig only after frost. One year our first frost was in December! Several years ago, we had a killing frost in the middle of digging. I did not see any difference in the tubers before and after the frost.
2024 seedling kept over to grow again in 2026.

When I think of the blooms on "Hollyhill varieties" the first thing that comes to my mind is "clean and cheery colors".

Here we are in December and I thought it might frost last night but at 7AM it was 35F. I remember having a first frost in September. For many years it occurred around Halloween. Now it seem to be around Thanksgiving but maybe some time in December. In Portland , at Gordon Jackman's house, several years ago he had no frost at all one year. Nothing froze. He lived in a house that was sheltered from the wind that flows East to West along the Columbia river. Much of our colder weather is "imported" from the East by those East winds.
Rejman's Polish Kid, the flower that easily wins best bicolor in show. Tubers a bit tricky to keep over but I still have a few. I will save one to give back to the person who gave me a tuber of it.

It was -2 when I got up this morning. I was feeling sorry for myself but then I remembered our dog has to go out there to use the bathroom. 🥶

MissyWeitzel every winter I have moments where I feel sorry for our dog having to go outside to pee. And then I remember how much he loves rolling around in the snow and ice just for the heck of it and stop feeling bad…. 😜

We are under a "rain event" here in the Pacific Northwest. It is still abnormally warm or we would be having blizzards I think. I'm watching for the great excitement of being able to see the creek water out of our back windows. That is what happens when it starts to flood. There have been some excellent floods in this area since time began! Some of them are still remembered by our neighbors. My "best" neighbor lives up a hill behind our property and when our creek floods they can't drive through it to get out. I told her to bring a car over and park it here as she could probably walk the flooded area in waders. We are in the middle of a hill slope so our house has never flooded, nor has it flooded between our house and the street, but she has to drop down to a lower level before going up her hill behind our place. The next neighbor back on our other side has a slightly more elevated road. The first owner of this house told us the floods had ALMOST reached the lower corner of our house but never actually reached it when he was here...so we are not worried, but it does add some excitement to a dull winter's day. It is also well above freezing so that is another worry we don't have.
