What tools do you use when hybridizing?
After 3 years of moving pollen around and playing Queen Bee( my hobby in retirement ), I think I've settled into a routine that works for me. I know everyone has their own methods and tools, and it would be nice to learn about yours.
Here's what I have settled in on:
Isolation of blooms from pollinator activity:
Organza bags. Large ones for bloom clusters, and small ones for when the pollinated pod is maturing on the plant. I've purchased the bags in almost every size.
I use multiple sizes for convenience(and cost), since I don't want or need a large bag on a pod.

Collection and distribution of pollen:
I have found these little plastic containers work great for collecting pollen and redistributing it. My dahlias are spread out all over my large yard. I put a piece of tape on the lid of the container and mark the variety. I can easily remove the tape and repurpose the container.
Better than paint brushes, are these makeup brushes. The bristle brush end is fantastic for stroking the pollen off the bloom and into the little plastic container. The other flat brush end I find is perfect for placing pollen on stigmas. They easily wash up with a little soap and water, or rinse in rubbing alcohol.
Labeling hybrid crosses
I found these labels on Amazon a few weeks ago and I'm thrilled by the ease of use. A permanent marker glides over them, and I can easily place them onto a stem with just one hand. The only downside is the organza bags can catch on them. When I harvest the pods, the tag will go with the ripe seeds.
My homemade hybridizing apron I made from an old pair of my husband's jeans.

Basket to carry everything around.
