i am glad to stumble across this thread. i have a lot of tubers that haven't broke dormancy. I saran wrapped them all - I had to dig in early Sept, it was so sodden and rainy. I kept them in a friend's basement because i was so afraid of them all freezing in my storage unit again - too many surprise Arctic Expresses! But this winter was mild, so maybe they never had enough sugars or the cold they needed.
Thank you, Steve., for your test and for this information.
I must divide at once when I dig, to prevent rot, which gets right down into the tubers in a hurry. I LIKE the saran wrap method, because it keeps the tubers from breaking dormancy too soon and allows me to cut out all the stems and potential rot. But this year is a total bust. I got them out of storage in their little cardboard boxes, went through and unwrapped all of them to check on every tuber and only about 1/3 of my entire stash are showing eyes, let alone sprouts.
i don't have room in the fridge for all of these... what can i do at this late date, if anything? Thanks. I have them in the light, still loosely wrapped in the saran wrap, outside in the shade - but maybe it's too cold? or too warm? Too light? too dark?
Never had this happen. I'm stumped.
thanks for any advice or help!
