A few hard frosts lately, but spring is taking hold for sure.

edewitt this afternoon the wind has been crazy here in Sonoma County with strong gusts. Luckily the 3' tall seedlings are in a protected area, while the rest of the dahlias plantings are less than a foot tall.

Our weather warning1
"Showers and thunderstorms will
be capable of producing funnel clouds as well as heavy rain,
accumulating hail, gusty winds, and lightning. Funnel clouds
often do not touch the ground. However, if they do touch the
ground they are dangerous and can be damaging." This is really weird weather for Portland, Oregon! And we are in this weather pattern too! Ted, you better wear a helmet if you are outside working today!

Cooler weather is nice for the last of the planting dahlias that are the rooted cuttings. Margaret has been putting together containers(large containers (from 7 gallon to 20 gallon pots) and that is outdoor work. Today and tomorrow will be fairly cool and then a warm day is forecast, followed by several days of normal June weather. Heat is the enemy of elderly gardeners and the forecast looks reasonably good.

Yes, I Am loving the cool. Yesterday I worked at removing bottom leaves from my growing dahlia plants. I got one of the 6 bedds done between rain showers. Its great working weather!

KitCMC All day yesterday I kept thinking I smelled burning plastic and it looked foggy and just plain strange outside. Today it is too.

It is from the wildfires. It’s smells and looks otherworldly here the last two days as well. I’m just doing the absolute minimum outside and hope the fires are contained sooner than later.

Same here. First day I could smell the smoke and it’s not very pleasant outside.

These are not my pictures, but wanted to share. First one is Detroit/Detroit River looking toward Canada and the second one is of Detroit from the Canadian shore. The tall tower is GM Headquarters.

Last year at this time we were crazy hot (for us) and dry. Complete burn ban. This year, I keep thinking Monty Python. “Winter changed into Spring, Spring changed into Summer, Summer changed back into Winter, and Winter gave Spring and Summer a miss and went straight on into Autumn.” Everything is a month behind. Great for salmon fishing. Not so great for growing things. Even the wildflowers are confused. Nothing to do but enjoy the adventure that is gardening in Alaska.

After a rather chilly June we are going out into July with temps in the 90's. I am glad my wateringsystems are up and working. Time to switch to early moring and evening garden work sessions.

OfficIALLY 95 DEGREES HERE but that is at the airport down by the river. It must be real close to 100 here. I got up and picked the raspberries at 6 AM and that worked. But that is enough outdoor work for today.

I would be glad to call this the Record heat of 2023, and have it all be a bit less form here on out. I am so glad we put shade cloth over our semi-dwrf Gravenstein apple! The raspberries I picked were much smaller then usual but very intense flavor. Maybe they were already half dehydrated...

I am getting new seedling blooms every day now and nearly all have been fully double. Nothing spectaular yet but a lot of nice cut flowers in clear bright colors.

Well, it has hit 94 today and that i snot a whole lot better. I spent my cooler time of the day picking raspberries and blackberries so I haven't even made it out to the dahlia garden. The sun will go off it soon though and I found the twine to start tying up the plants. I can do that once the shade comes down.

Up here we generally tell summer "time" by the fireweed blooms. In June, the bottom 1/3 blooms, in July the second 1/3 etc. and in September they seed out and we know Winter is just a few weeks away. (The height of the fireweed indicates the snow depth.) This year, it's been so cold and wet that the fireweed is saying it's May. Literally everything is a month behind. Except the mushrooms. Those are several weeks early. I just had one mushroom pop up that clearly has been working out. It had a rock. On its head. Bodybuilding mushroom.

It's been over 90 degrees and dry here consistently for over 2 months (it usually doesn't last for more than a week any other year) and it's wrought havoc on the garden. Most plants are a very stunted 2-3 ft. tall and the blooms are half the size they should be and mostly open-centered. El Nino has so far made a promising turnaround of a year a very frustrating one and I'm hoping for some consistent rain at this point. I keep checking the 10-day forecasts and it just says more dry 90+ temps.

If I recall, in late summer rain may come in buckets at times in your climate. Or, not. You may be in the same boat as many people who grow dahlias in warm weather areas. They consider them a Fall crop with a rather short blooming season until they are set back by the frost.

Definite shift in the weather today. Fall has arrived. Wind has a bit of a nip to it. We didn't get much sun or warmth in my part of Alaska this year but the past couple of weeks have been both. Lovely but not enough time for any of the plants - native or non-native (like my dahlias) to catch up. With first frost about 4 or 5 weeks away (if I'm lucky), I'll be storing most everything in their pots this year. Plus side, it'll be really easy to get things going in the Spring. I'm also putting up two 25 x 10 x 7 and one 12 x 7 x 7 hoop houses next year. That will help alot since we seem to be in a cycle of cold, wet summers (which, my mom reminded me, is how they were when I was a little Erika.)

Erika, your sun is all down here and I would like to send some of it back home. HIgh 90-s to low hundreds for the next 5 days.
