A few hard frosts lately, but spring is taking hold for sure.

It is only 49 Degrees here, very dark and rainy....not a work outside day at all! We did get the first bed dug yesterday and they are washed now so IF I turned on the heater in the greenhouse I COULD go work on dividing them...or I could wait a few days until the sun shine more. Very dark and dismal...

Wow! I’ve never heard of a ban on them. We’ve grown them for years and I think we’ve only gotten a couple of “volunteer” plants. They must be heartier growers in your area.

Oregon is very protective of their forests. Apparently it has been found seeding far away from the parent shrubs. I know when I grew it in Washington State, i got volunteers but I just pulled them out or moved them. Anything I could use in my cut flower bouquets was welcome if I had a space for it.

AndreaB Thank you, I will certainly consider it if I can be sure to manage it responsibly here. It’s really pretty so I’d be game for some TLC to make it happen!

Krista Krista, it also has a strong fragrance. It makes me think of plums turning slightly alcoholic under the tree at the end of the season.....

Krista I kind of enjoyed it. Being as alcoholic beverages don't agree with me, I could at least smell the kind of wine scent...smells like an autumn bash!

34 degrees here this morning. I have not been out to the garden to check but I do not see frost from my window. I hope I get one more day to enjoy the flowers....

We skated a frost here too this morning! Happy to have returned from being out of town to another day of flowers and extra time to make sure everyone is tagged and labeled properly!

TONIGHT IS probably going to be the night. Clear sky at sundown and my thermometer reads 41 Shortly afterwards. Its going to drop.. I think we are ready if one can ever be ready to see the end of the blooming season. I picked mums and dahlias for my house. Just loving on this bouquet full of seedlings,,,

It was 28 degrees this morning. I guess that is the end of the glorious bloom season. At least we get a few more days of good digging weather. They are about half dug now.

We received a light frost this morning and the forecast is for below freezing temps tonight. I’m afraid AC Murphy (along with a number of others) won’t quite make it to blooming this year *sigh!

Our first frost was early this morning. Plants now have "cooked spinach" leaves for the most part. It was just frost as opposed to a light frost or a heavy frost. The plants will still be standing but the flowers took a beating. We will continue to dig and it will be nice to verify what we are digging as the floppy flowers with sagging stems will still be there. This is an early frost date for us . I believe we are frosting before Chicago that is forecast for it's first frost tomorrow night.
I posted this picture of a first year waterlily on Facebook. It has fewer florets and they are larger but still cup. About 170 likes so far.

Teddahlia I sure do like the form. It will be interesting to see how it scores in the trial gardens and seedling bench.

Teddahlia the wonderful photo highlights the blooms from three different angles. Those varied angles, that include a tighter bloom, really shows off the form and colors.

First year seedlings are frequently not as good as you think. I wonder if the big florets will wilt for example. Will the color continue to be nice? I have dug the clump but have not yet divided it and will be able to see of it makes some tubers. "A picture does not a dahlia make. " and there is a lot that can go wrong.
