KitCMC I feel like this is the year for "lessons learned"!! 😧 Cry first, laugh later after they're all re-planted and they're back under your control. Marking each tuber with an ID is good for many purposes.

OMG! Utter Tragedy. I’m so sorry! It’s the worst initial feeling when even just one pot or tray of babies hits the skids. I can’t imagine a whole shelving rack! Ugh, I’m glad you were able to recover allllllmost all. Past KitCMC was lookin’ out for today’s @KitCMC by practicing excellent labeling!

BackyardBouquets_17 if it was my tuber I would remove the sprout** as one would for taking a cutting, and trying to leave any remaining buds on the tuber. I would rinse off the one inch cutting, then place in about 1/4" of water in a bottle cap or vessel that will allow the cutting to remain mostly upright. I'd place in indirect very bright light, and when possible facilitate the water it's sitting in being warm. Crazy people like me move it around to different window sills. Keep the water level maintained, and replace if it gets dirty. I've had luck with rooting this way(takes 10 days to 21 days), when all else has failed. It just is a matter of how much fiddling you have time for.
** I am actually doing this activity this morning on a variety I really want to save!

I have a question for the group....one of my tubers has developed a sprout that is getting a nice root system off that sprout. The tuber itself does not have any roots. So far, I don't think the tuber is rotting, but I'm not sure. Should I just plant 'as is' or cut off the tuber, or?? Thanks for your help.

Flowernut If the tuber is not rotted I would just plant it "as is". That is normal behavior.

Where do dahlias grow roots(hair roots)? They are formed in the same area where the tubers form and that is where the sprout attaches to the tuber. Hair roots on the tubers are just extra roots and not the primary roots. Tubers are depositories for nutrients. When sprouting the tubers in the gallon pots for the trial garden, there are usually some hair roots at the bottom of the tuber and we carefully preserve all the roots for the best results.

bloomhjelm where did you find Ibara Hime? 😱 I'm also trying to find all the barbed ones 😝 I think I have 4 now...wondering if I plant them near each other if I'll get any seeds? or will that be just a total mess if they all originally come from "thistle"😂

Well on schedule the May monsoon is here. Happens every year when the area I plant gets like 16 inches of rain over 10 days. I do have my stuff all in the 3 gallon pots and its good draining soil , so just not putting them sunk flush in the ground yet.

Put down slug pellets. They ate some of my cuttings was pretty annoying but will survive. So tubers can grow and ill just likely wait another week to get them sunk in the ground. The good thing is t post will be super easy to put in the ground lol 😂

JessieC Yea so much rain the last few days from the storms. I am hoping to get t post in ground this weekend. Excited to grow this year now that I have done a full year with no voles lol but they have to stay in 3 gallon pots Lot of work but faster than digging in the fall. 😄

I am planting my pre-started dahlias out and my organizational skills just weren't what they were....I'm more like the little kid that wants one of each in the candy store! And half a dozen each of the ones they like best! But its a very small garden. There will be many many left over plants! I seem to be favoring the seedlings from the past few years that I like rather then the parents that I got the seeds from. I am counting on the fact that I will remove many of these that do not live up to expectations and that will leave the good ones more room to grow.

NCDahlia yeah you had great success last season as I recall! I went out to see how everyone was doing after all that rain. A couple of tubers rotted, and I’ve got cuttings to go in their place. Lots of earthworm activity, which seems promising. A good weekend for the garden. Enjoy!
