Since it took so long to warm up here, I planned on waiting until early to mid May to start planting tubers only, but several growers in my DS with decades more experience than I are already planting theirs. I think I'll give in to this nonexistent peer pressure and start soon. I have the rest of my orders coming by Saturday so Sunday or Monday seems like a good time to start! Cuttings and seedlings will go in closer to the end of May. Flower season is the best.

I had a bicolor sport of Florence Winship that I grew for years before I lost it. The petals would drop off the day after it was cut but it still is/was my favorite dahlia.
How long will it be before one of the large breeders of bedding dahlias decides it is worth the expense to introduce a GMO-blue gene into their line of dahlias.

So that is the pink I want to aim for, huh? It is pretty. Or do you mean the pink and white combo?

(1) Bicolor is hard to breed
(2) Bicolor where white is longitudinal on the floret is rare..
(3) Deep pink color is very rare in bi colors.
(4) This bloom has a crappy open center and would be a loser in my seedlings.

I missed Dahlia Talk this month, but would have loved to hear the chat about barbed dahlias. I managed to purchase Vista Cody and Ibara Hime this year. Ibara Hime reminds me of the lost "Thistle" dahlia I was trying to find from the Encyclopedia of Dahlias.

At the local plant nursery. When I see someone looking at Dr. Hammett's originations at the nursery and I say I met the guy who bred that, I get a blank stare from the person.

Planted 4% of the dahlias today. They are tubers and the soil is vey dry for this time of the year. The amount of time spent getting ready to plant exceeded the planting time by a few times over.

I do not take notes and forget 90% of the detail and since we have been growing dahlias since 1990 and most of what is said is something familiar to me and I do not remember it at all. So when a person with less experience participates, they find out lots of things they did not know. And we focus on new things and novel ways of doing things and get into some very extreme detail on many subjects. Questions from beginners are what we love because what seems to be a simple question generally has much more to it and also brings out different opinions from experienced growers.

What is the cause of a tuber sprouting but then just sits. It’s maybe an inch long but has just been sitting there for the last month now. My one and only Hollyhill Serenity that I really want to salvage if I can.

Pull out the tuber and it will probably be part rotten. Remove the rot and then say a prayer.

Just a seedling and I think it was mis labeled. I like to attach pictures for some unknown reason. Usually
I know what flower is in the picture.
