I only grow KA Rosie Jo and it did ok but the tuber production was pathetic only 1 tuber + the mother tuber. Hard for someone to get enough build up stock in the market place with poor tuber production and storage issues.

They pulled all her 2023 releases because of cutting issues.

Ohhhh I have always wanted to try wyn’s Eeeek…It is so chaotic!

In England stately homes hold national collections of various flowers/shrubs/trees but normal people can sign up to be the holder of a national collection too -keeping rare forms alive. I wonder if something like that system could ever take hold in America.

CiCiVacation Wyn's Eeek! was a fun one to grow. I don't think it did well in the very dry/hot climate Boise has in the summer which seemed to make the blooms quite shallow. I'd love to get that back in the garden and see how well it does here in NM. The monsoon season mid-summer seems to really make a difference. Hopefully we'll have some more vendors offer it up next year and I'm quick enough to order it.

CiCiVacation I love your 'Bond' style garden, Live and Let Die! that gave me a good chuckle, it sounds very dangerous and exciting, and cutthroat.

edewitt your photo of Wyn's Eeek! is truly extraordinary, even with a shallow bloom. I hope you can find it again, I'd love to see a performance comparison from NM. The petals in your photo remind me of old-fashioned ribbon candy, very sweet.

edewitt Honestly, it was always a bit shallow for me, too, but the wild long petals masked that fact. For comparison's sake, here's Wyn's Eeek in my garden years ago... I took SO many picts of it that I feel a bit pathetic. Every year I tend to ignore all but a few stand-out varieties.

Oh guardian gardens for dahlias would be very interesting- it would have to be more of a guardian web of protectors because of storage issues - you wouldn’t want to have just one garden as a safeguard. It would be so helpful for cases like Wyn’s dahlias- so many great ones but only a few remain easily gettable in commerce. Obviously dahlia societies are doing this - helping keep rare varieties going -but it would be valuable perhaps to have it on a national scale?

I find myself in the position of being a senior who is not as quick as she used to be. When a site doesn't let you see what they have before they open the gate for online sales, I don't stand a chance. Some make you delete the one they no longer have, others let you know it's not available and allow you to continue. Very stressful!

Great thread. I was mainly a lurker with a few posts in the cubits dahlia thread. So happy that we have new forum. i will be trying to post more and become a valuable contributor.

i really wanted to post on the cubits thread but cleaned my passwords on my computer and lost my cubits password. bummer for me.

Ted, love your dahlias. I did get lucky at the Crazy4 sale with one of your new waterlily varieties. But stayed away from the Hollyhill Letetia. i know they would go fast.

StevenS I am pretty sure Cubits only allowed one device to be logged on at a time too, and man, once you were logged out or forgot your password, that was it... there was no help to get logged back in, so I had to make a new account over there recently, and then now, here we are!

I don't have the intestinal fortitude for these cutthroat 'hard openings.' I went back onto the Meadowpoint site and ordered two more 'commoners ' - Ferncliff Tropics and Rip City.

Love the idea of gardens that would preserve rare or almost extinct varieties, and that the historic iris people let the irises that make it into their gardens stay, even if those varieties become common or popular again.

@Teddahlia what is the correct spelling for your new beauty, I see that The American Dahlia Society spells it "Hollyhill Leticia" however Crazy4Dahlias spells it "Hollyhill Letitia"?

Krista I am curious also. Crazy 4 had it as Letitia and also the images were named Latitia.

I also practice a lot of 'live and let die' gardening. 😁

I was able to acquire and grow Wyn's Eeekk!! one year. I loved it! Au Beau Pre used to sell it, but they are not shipping to the US this year. I planted it in a pot so maybe I still have it.

blown_dry Oh my, I hadn't noticed the third spelling from Crazy 4 - the plot thickens. I sure hope your Wyn's Eeekk!! makes it, I'd love to see how it does in your garden as well. And it's encouraging to hear it continues to live in some corners of the world.

Oh CiCiVacation, I would take many many photos of this outstanding specimen too, you're in good company. Interesting how much less variegation yours has in this photo. Very beautiful indeed.

Krista THis is just a goofy ramble but after raising kids with dyslexia I notice that several of the dahlia growers seem to have it also. I would guess that it may go hand in hand with the interest in colors, forms, etc and the ability to obsess about them. In which case, it is a wonderful trait for a breeder to have but may make paperwork with them a bit challenging! I am glad we have a world where some can focus more on the artistic or obsess over perfecting a flower form by breeding carefully. And hope they all team up with a partner who obsesses over spelling, book keeping, and shipping out in a timely manner :-)

I had Wyn's Eeek, but it did not make a good cut flower so I let it go. Sometimes I would take on to Market with me and just display it on the table to attract interest to my display of premade bouquets.

I was late to the Cowlitz opening. Then I didn't meet the order minimum, but I couldn't add to the count in my order because limit of 1. By the time I added stuff and checked out again, the stuff I really wanted was sold out. C'est la vie!

I had tubers in my cart and I was filling out the information, but removed everything when I saw the soonest I could get my order was end of April.

blown_dry had my top 3 choices in hand, but had a hiccup with my auto fill and the exact same thing happened. By the time I had reached the minimum again they were all gone. Oh well 🤷♀

I was so close to getting Salish Twilight Girl but just barely missed it at Cowlitz River. I also realized she'd listed Rolf on there and I hastily added it before I checked out and on my invoice I see it was set for $0. 🙁 I'll wait a bit before I email her asking what the actual cost is so I can pay her for it. That might be the nicest "uniform" variegated flower out there.

My experience was similar. I decided on the 2 roots I wanted most, one of which was Salish Twilight Girl. I knew I had to have a $25 minimum . Then I thought "what if one of these isn't available when I check out and I don't have $25 worth?", so I added a third and placed the order at exactly 5:00 pm EST. It went! Then I got a message: The second one I ordered was gone but STG and my "extra" were still in the cart. Deleted the unavailable one and filled out all the shipping information again. Hit order. Sorry STG unavailable - at which point I shut down my browser. I don't understand when I was paying by PayPal and they greet me with a message that "we recognize you on this browser and there's no need to sign in", why I had to fill in all my mailing information. Pay Pal already has all that and if I hadn't had to type it all in TWICE I might have gotten at least one of the roots. There has to be a better way!
