MissyWeitzel I think you would've really loved Formby Perfection when it was around. Brian R definitely reminds me of it but doesn't have the almost tube-like petals that unfurl to form this perfect B-sized sphere.

MissyWeitzel the good news is I just found it still exists at K&B Smith Dahlias. They introduce all the Formby releases but they're on the other side of the Pacific. 😢

MissyWeitzel Juliarugula They just told me they introduced Formby Perfection back in 1976. Unfortunately they don't do international shipping so hopefully someone will find a way to get it back over here eventually. At least I have Formby Kaitlin to look forward to in the garden this year.

KitCMC I wouldn't be concerned. I think it took over a week maybe two weeks to get a response from JS Dahlias. It just takes a long time to get through that many emails. And I would hope they take lots of breaks with hot, soothing drinks (can you tell I feel guilt about being part of a deluge?).

CiCiVacation I really appreciate your input on this, since you’re a grower/seller. I’ve always just tried to follow the rules provided on the site to the “T” in an attempt to reduce communication impact. If an email isn’t specifically requested, I haven’t sent one but I have been enlightened! I see now how not doing so puts the seller in an awkward position, thank you for your insight.

If I recall correctly, the Birch Bay site does not request pre-approval of an order before mailing. (Boy would that be chaotic!). I routinely mail-in my order with a check immediately, as I believe it has always been "first come, first served".

BarryO I agree, it would be overwhelming to me too - although that's how the Dahlialama prefers their shop sales to operate. I did also like that Lobaugh's provided the option at checkout to fulfill payment via mail-in check. Granted, it caused me to panic when I accidentally chose "CheckPayment" so I immediately placed a duplicate order paying online. But since both order requests were honored equally I can really appreciate that they reserve this option for folks.

I am conflicted about whether to email the Boleys with an order request. If I do, and they put a hold on a tuber for me, but then the next day they get a mailed order with a check included (from somebody else, assuming mine is still in transit), shouldn't the check-in-hand trump my claim?

PNWGal THat is why I emailed them what I wanted and immediately put the check in the mail along with a copy of the list I had emailed. That worked very well. Snail Mail is so messed up now and I am not sure all the post offices have recovered from Christmas. The mail doesn't work like it used to and I find that just as true sending something to my daughter in Maine as sending it to my sister in Bellingham., WA.I Just made sure I was very clear that the written order was a copy of the same one I had sent by email.

I went to JS Dahlias and BB. JS Dahlias requests an email in advance. BB does not.

I will just hope for the best. I agreed that substitutions were okay. Who knows, maybe I'll end up with something I like even better?!

It doesn't seem like it was that long ago when there was no internet and the vendors would mail out a paper catalog yearly to everyone on their mailing list. Customers would snail mail their order in and usually would list substitutions. You could always phone the vendor but a short long-distance phone call could cost as much as the whole order. I wonder if there are still any vendors who only mail out paper catalogs to members on their secret mailing list. They would do all of their business with snail mail and would not use email or take phone calls.

I still get a mail catalog from Mohawk Dahlias every year. They have some nice varieties I can't get elsewhere, like several Korb varieties.

The phone bill in those days was one of your major household expenses especially if you had relatives or friends out of town. In the early 90s we did one of those paper catalogs complete with a picture of our child holding a flower. Since the acquisition of hard to get varieties is so expensive now, dahlia friends are more important than ever.

todgor I poked around earlier in the season about Mohawk, I couldn’t find an online presence and assumed they were no longer in business. Finding out how they operate checks out now!

Krista I also got their catalog this year. I ordered from her last year, so skipped this year. She does have some old-time varieties you don't find any more. She's responsive to emails, but you mail in a check/order.
