Karma varieties are patented but of course their seeds are not. If it were a GMO plant, it's seedlings would be protected by the patent. There are no GMO dahlias being sold that I know of but there have been GMO dahlias created in search of a blue dahlia. They were never sold and not very blue.

bloomhjelm That's a great color! Karma Prospero was my favorite of the Karma series. The light pink against the dark stems was striking. Unfortunately, KP shattered badly so never made a very good commercial cut variety.

Bessie My dahlias that make flowers consistently and are loaded with new blooms have been my favorite this season. Cornel has made me happier than any of the new or trendy varieties. How many plants was this harvested from?

Justafewdahlias the flowers are all from one original seedling clump. The story behind this dahlia is a good lesson for me to not be too hasty. In 2023 I pulled out the plant to cull it, based on petal count. It laid on my sidewalk overnight. I decided the next morning to plant it in a better lit area of my yard, and relocated it in a raised bed of the vegetable garden. Last winter the plant died back completely and overwintered in the ground without digging. Today it's around 6' tall and 7' wide. This picture from the end of July shows it towering over my PVC tomato cages and cucumber trellis.

This is a picture today, after harvesting many blooms yesterday.

2024 seedlings: This is a good subject for winter discussions and undoubtedly lots of pictures will be posted to alleviate the winter garden doldrums. Right now, they need to be dug and stored away.

My son and I just went out with flashlight and headlamps and attempted to cover the whole seedling bed with some frost cloth. Not sure it will work but we’re going to 33-35 tonight. I have about 40% unbloomed seedlings. Really hoping everything survives. I did pull 9 or 10 special ones that are in grow bags into our little greenhouse sunroom.

I headed out after work and just rolled into town to begin fall dahlia care! I’ll have lots that won’t bloom this year but I’ve tagged everything that did. We are expecting 32-33 degrees on Friday here in central WA so I’m hoping to get plants chopped down and be ready to dump & wash clumps (planted mostly in grow bags this year) by the end of the week!

We made it through! One more night at 35 degrees and we’re safe here for at least 9 more. With the very very late start sure can use this extra time for seed pod development. I also have SO many that didn’t bloom yet. Weird year for sure!

Teddahlia Quite often the solid sport of a variegated dahlia is not an attractive color. That is the main reason I do not plant variegated dahlias for commercial cut. (too many blooms are not salable). The Red Tiger Rose sport is a beautiful, non-fading red and that makes it much more useful overall..
