I'm done purchasing this year but am still waiting for a few things to come through from Canada, and some cuttings. Every year about this time I am surprised by the number of great dahlias left on the market at fire sale prices, and in six months I will be paying twice these prices for the same ones. Oh well.

bloomhjelm It will be interesting to see. The market seemed more flooded this year and new sellers offering huge discounts much earlier than usual, which isn't good for sellers as a whole.

My granddaughter and I were looking at the ADS online classification Guide. When we looked HH Fingerpaint she yelled, "I want that in my garden!" She is going to have her own row this year. (along with her three Ketchup & Mustard, which is her favorite)

It's amazing to me how dahlias seem to drop in people's laps and they have no idea. For instance, I was on my second year growing Sandia Bertha when it was released. I have no idea how that worked out. I bought it from the Boley's. In March I was at an in-person sale and they had River's Jedidiah. I said, "I've never heard of this before" The seller said she thinks it's an old one not classified. Today, I see it's a 2025 intro. So fun and odd to find out you have something new, because you were at the right place at the right time.

I like Fingerpaint and we planted about 10 tubers of it. That is lot for for us old timers. I also like the new one called Razz Berry as it is twice as tall as Fingerpaint.

Anyhow, I was excited to see that Ferncliff was open and offering shipping to the US, as I had heard they were (understandably) not planning to. Until I added to my cart and saw the shipping costs! Oof! I expected it to be higher than previous years, but yikes. I guess I won’t be ordering after all. Too bad. I don’t blame them, and I guess it’s a good solution to still get their tubers to the big buyers in the US, even if it’s out of reach to most home gardeners.

Juliarugula I have not checked Ferncliff yet, but a few years ago another dahlia friend and I split an order so that we each paid part of the extra charges. It worked out well for us even though we were in different parts of the country. And he had to pay the shipping from my house to his. If you made up a group order and split the costs several ways it would be even more tolerable.

Juliarugula shipping 4 tubers($94) to California incurs a charge of about $235 for handling/inspection/shipping. Ouch! $329 for 4 tubers. Do I need to mention that I passed on this sale?

I think 329 was Canadian dollars.
conversion rate... .73 x 329(Canadian ) = $240.17(US dollars)

There's a $300CDN ($220US) order minimum AND $200CDN ($144US) shipping charge for Ferncliff US orders. I figure that it will be mostly suppliers that would find it worth the money, but combining orders would also be a great way to go. Do your own math on the currency conversion! I did my best.

Historically, Ferncliff is a first class outfit. They sell good stuff and when they introduce a flower it is reliable and a good one. They used to have a physical presence in the USA so they could avoid the export fees. I believe it did not work out because the actual tubers were grown in Canada. They used to introduce varieties for Wayne Holland who originated his dahlias with the "Hy" prefix and is a famous breeder. Yes, combining an order with several people is a smart way to go. We did that through our dahlia club with our Halls of Heddon order when they still sold to the USA. We had about 5 people split the "overhead" costs (shipping and inspections) and it was a good deal.
