Does anybody have info on Ferncliff Gardens opening? Seems like they often open September 1, but I haven’t heard anything about an opening date yet this yea...

Ferncliff restocked and added some new releases. I refreshed Lobaughs a few times and then got distracted. I am extremely distractable nowdays, and didn't think of it again until the next day. And I didn't see Big Dahlias until stuff was sold out. BD is a little tricky because you have to go to each item to get the price info. Oh well. Some years I get a kid to surf while I type. Big Dahlias has an id number of 8 and Ferncliff 27. Mr Blown Dry and I always marvel when we see an ID number smaller than 50. I just added supplier number 452.

I was surprised to see that it looks like Lobaugh’s didn’t offer Suitzus Julie this year since it’s gained in popularity as of late. Perhaps I just missed it in the lineup. I’ve been trying to reduce the shopping this year but even so, I wouldn’t have intentionally missed Lobaugh’s or Big Dahlias this year if I’d had my brain on!

Suitzus Julie (1)Show people want it as it is the only micro waterlily(2) Waterlily people want it too. (3) Not a good tuber maker. Is this the definition of a "unicorn?
Even I sort of want it.

Can confirm this. From my three plants last year, I have one halfway decent root ball that I brought inside and potted up immediately. It is pushing two minuscule sprouts that I have little faith I’ll keep alive until May. 😅

I did see that Kale Lane may be growing Etoile de Wensel on IG which was neat to see; sounds like they struck out with seed production unfortunately.

Kennedy Hill had a Suitzus Julie cutting and I bit on that. Also on Opal. (Is Opal an import?)

Speaking of imports, a fun fact is that Lily's Garden sold a mislabeled tuber as La Belle Epoque last year and many of us who bought it thought that it was possibly Negroni Sunset. Then some growers told me it was definitely not Negroni Sunset. But Liliana confirmed the variety was in fact Klara Zak, which she says is a new Sarah Raven dahlia. After I had gotten frustrated and just gifted the whole clump.

I picked up a Suitzus Julie tuber at our society sale this spring but unfortunately it grew for a while then just never did anything and it didn't make any tubers either.
A WMDS friend gave me Cutie Patootie which isn't micro but is super small. The name is perfectly fitting but almost too cheesy and I wonder if that's why I never see anyone talk about it. Name aside, it is really cute and it makes a lot of flowers and tubers and is a taller plant. I really like micros but some of those plants and tuber clumps are ridiculously tiny. I'd love to see more intentional breeding for micro blooms on a 2-3' plant. It would definitely be easier to groom them for showing! Anyway, I think Cutie Patootie might be a good one to put in your small waterlily breeding patch.
(This was an early bloom and later ones had better centers)

Juliarugula If this year is anything like last year, I could probably pick up a couple extra tubers if anybody really wants them (in early May, although sometimes there are smaller scale tuber opportunities in February).

I would so certainly take you up on this, however, I’m so indebted to you already. Interesting that she’s so prevalent in Indiana, that gives me hope she might fare OK in the central Washington heat!

Last year the Elkhart dahlia sale had loads of Suitzus Julie. It surprises me to hear it’s a poor tuber maker. Maybe it likes Indiana? Rusty Ritchie told me it was one I should try, but micros aren’t my thing so I passed.

If this year is anything like last year, I could probably pick up a couple extra tubers if anybody really wants them (in early May, although sometimes there are smaller scale tuber opportunities in February).

Christy Parks of Parks Dahlias sent me an email. She said that due to an accident she's taking a year off of tuber sales, but with the help of friends and family, she got her tubers dug more or less.

I notice the Stonehouse catalog is listing several new varieties with the "RM" prefix (e.g., RM Mauvelous). Does anyone know who is the breeder and if they have plans to seek trademark protection.

SteveM these are River Merle's new releases. She shared the partnership news on Instagram. On her webpage she says she doesn't plan to pursue any parents, trademarks or royalty programs.

PS Dahlia Del's posted an update about 14 hours ago which I just caught, saying due to customer harassment last year he may make sales membership-only or membership-priority. I am assuming "MTG" he references is Marjorie Taylor Green.

Wow. People can be so frustrating. I hope Dahlia Del is able to figure out a system that works for him - everything I’ve ordered from him has been great. I’d be sad to see his online offerings disappear.

Good for Del. People are so rude over their orders, it's just a flower. Mistakes happen. Too many cry babies

Out of all the orders Ive placed over the years I maybe have emailed 2-3 times in when I had a huge issue. I usually view it as a sunk cost if I get sent too many blind tubers and do not do business anymore with those persons.

Ordering wise I got some cuttings from "brambleside farm" no other orders this year. Might shop River's when they open.

Three cheers for Brambleside, I shopped both their tuber and cuttings sales this fall. They’re transparent about and meticulous with their testing practices; last year, my order arrived in beautiful and thoughtful packaging, and Emily is a dream to communicate with.
