First to bloom seedlings May 21st to May 25th. I don't think there are any keepers here, but I'll wait and observe for a while. I do like the ruffled petals...

More new seedlings and all from Ferncliff Dolly. I love how large and almost cartoonish FC Dolly is, and the large size has definitely transferred to most of the seedlings I've had thus far. Still all first blooms only. I'm going to have a difficult time getting rid of any of them even if they don't improve, but I guess that's normal for wannabe hybridizers like me. I have another one half open and it's gonna be a winner I know (in my dreams)!

Vase test for today. I’ve escaped the Japanese beetles till now ( never before in my life have I managed to get this late without bagging blooms from the Japanese beetles) guess I need to get more organza bags again. I haven’t sprayed molasses in a month now so have to wonder if that’s now why I’m seeing them or if it’s just a coincidence.

This has been my favorite of the season so far but I have another one opening from the same seed parent that will make it hard to choose a favorite! I’ll need to get a pic of it fully opened Sometime. I picked this one younger to see if it continues to open in the vase

I have always like the flowers with variable color splotches. HH Calico is on my re-acquire list as the stock I got last year was a failure. Seedling reminds me of Calico.

Teddahlia my Hollyhill Calico had white splotches at the beginning of the season but is now blooming with pretty even color (petals are only slightly tipped with white). I saw another grower online mention similar behavior. Ted, in your experience, is this typical? Or do you think I should probably expect my stock to have lost it’s white splotches?

As you may not know, we have not grown Calico in over 10 years and so how it is currently behaving is unknown to us. I liked it way back when and this picture is what it looked like. I hope to get some good stock next year but maybe there is none. Meanwhile we do have our lavender Calico....

Tonight I am getting a kick out of watching Salish Lullabye go to sleep. Lullabye is the plain Jane seedling of Salish Twilight Girl, in that she is just pale pink. However, as night settles down around us, she roll sher petal up layer by layer so that the rd violet backs show against the still open petals

The seedling I was watching last night went open centered over night, but I am pretty sure I have better stock out there...Now I will focus on finding the best with centers that last! And every time I start STG seeds I get some like this so if I don't have one with a good enough center now I will keep working on it. I wish I could grow out seedlings over the winter to test them for the traits they carry so when planting out time comes I would know which ones not to waste my limited space on!

I enjoy this petal shape. Its vase life seemed to outlast other flowers picked at the same time. AirPod case for scale 😂. Is this style of petal something unique or am I just not experienced enough to see it for what it really is🙈. A poorly formed orchid? Poorly formed peony? Or cactus? Etc

There was a term double orchid used and one with a tight center would be a fully double orchid.

The florets are nice and flat and that is a good trait for a formal decorative flower.
