First to bloom seedlings May 21st to May 25th. I don't think there are any keepers here, but I'll wait and observe for a while. I do like the ruffled petals...

Bessie FYI, I lost the tuber clump for this variety(24611). Not 100% sure why, but my best guess is the 5x7" pot it was planted in, and sunken in the ground, was too strong of plastic. The tubers got impacted, and suffocated. I have some cuttings of it I'm trying to root. Moral to the story is to make sure the pots you use to plant seedlings in, if they are sunken into the ground, allow the tubers to bust through.

@Bessie the closest trial garden to me is Bonneville in Elkhart, IN. Every August there is a judging seminar that any society members may attend. If there is a trial garden near you, I'd venture to guess your local society will do something similar. The 3 ways I have learned the most about dahlia forms is by:
A) attending the judging seminar in a trial garden. Non judges and candidate judges tag along in small groups with a senior judge as they score the entries. (It's also awesome to get a sneak preview at many that will be released the following year)

Clerking at a dahlia show where you follow along with judges as they evaluate entries. I learn so much from this!
Reading and rereading this book.

I have yet to sign up to be a candidate judge but all this talking about it reminds me I need to get started on that path! 😊

I will be attending the Judges training on August 3rd at Rivers Dahlias(2 hour drive) . I get to teach but am so good at teaching , I have to compress my slot into 10 minutes. My typical dahlia stories take longer than that. Just the facts. I suppose. We will be using the ADS teaching modules that are on the ADS website and available for ADS members to view. You can learn lot from those modules and I viewed them a year or two ago when they were created.
It was mentioned that one way to learn the judging process is being a clerk for judging team at show. I enjoy using the clerk to "break ties" when the judges are not in agreement. You go quickly from an observer to a judge. If the decision is very important one however, I bring in a real judge. It would not be fair to the clerk to have to pick the best flower in show.

Teddahlia I heard about this even months ago but I wasn’t able to find any online information about it. I’m sure I must be looking in the wrong places — are you able to share where this was advertised so that I can keep my eyes peeled for future events?

Training is for PNDC members. The Federation and the PNDC are "clubs for clubs" . Groups of clubs combine forces to do things a single club could not do. Training classes are one product. I am a member of both the Federation and PNDC but chose to skip the Federation training and do only the PNDC training. Theoretically your clubs in the midwest have a similar association of clubs and do training.

Teddahlia yes, the judging seminar is for the midwest conference. The trial garden is near Elkhart and as a result it seems the Elkhart dahlia society does a lot of the heavy lifting for the MDC as a whole. They host the annual meeting and do a lot of the organizational tasks year-round. Great people there!!

Personal rules: (1)Never post a picture of a first year seedling(2) Never post the picture of the first flower on first year seedling. (3) Never post a picture of flower with even minor damage. (4) These are you own stupid rules so you can break the rules.

This is the picture of an actual ball dahlia seedling. Miniature balls have been our specialty for years. Finally a ball sized seedling. Breeding ball dahlias is not very easy, especially when you do not grow hardly any ball sized dahlias.

I'll break Ted's rules and post a first flower of a first year seedling. 😁
I reread the ADS guide for collarette form because I couldn't remember what the preferred petaloid length is and it is one-half to two thirds the length of the outer petals. So I will just watch and see how the gaps and over lapping works out and if the petal splits go away on future blooms.

Is there a name for this petal shape? Scalloped? It's a wide petal with two notches, kind of like a duck's foot.

Close up of a white flower that has purple stripes on the reverse of the floret that can be seen on the front of the floret. The florets are translucent enough for the purple pigment to show. Weird. Not all flowers and I bet the purple pigment "bleeds" and is not noticeable on most ripe flowers.

Teddahlia I've observed a similar patterning on at least one seedling this year.

First bloom first year Ferncliff Dolly seedling. I didn't measure it but it's very large, like it's seed parent. Dahlia shimmer on the front and the back, which is a creamy white.

Many times the reason there are so many of a color is that people love that color and cannot get enough of them. Or many of them are that color but are not very good but that is all there is so they keep growing them. In other words, your orange one may be better than the others and be very successful. However, we have found that first year seedlings are overrated by us and the second year is the year you may see it's faults or rarely see how wonderful it is.

For some reason, people like to see pictures of seedlings that are not good enough. I love the color of this wannabee waterlily with an open center.

Teddahlia as long as that open center doesn't make copious quantities of pollen, it would make a nice flower for arrangements is a vase. I've noted that some open centers make almost no pollen, while others, that are not desirable, will be dropping pollen after a few days.
