Darce And finally I wasn’t familiar with the Victorian artist Henrietta Maria Gulliver but look at this voluptuous arrangement of black red dahlias- it looks very modern and Sara Ravenish to my eye
Darce And here is another Sara Raven (at least to my eye) type dahlia arrangement by Charles Ethan Porter
Krista Darce Thank you for starting this thread, I’m really enjoying it. For some reason, dahlias in art wasn’t something on my radar, especially historically. This is eye opening, and these are beautiful. Now I’m thinking I might be desiring prints of some of these, like @MissyWeitzel. I love how you and your husband celebrated Valentine’s Day last year.
MissyWeitzel Not vintage, but I fell in love with 'A Mindful Garden' by Duy Huynh and ordered a print. It's huge and this pic doesn't do justice to the actual colors, but he has a lot of other really fantastic work and a lot of it has floral elements.
Darce Oh that’s so pretty! I love the colors - I think this should be a visual resource/appreciative thread for all images of dahlias - modern, vintage, and antique. Your piece is so dreamy- where do you plan on hanging it?
MissyWeitzel Darce It is already hanging up above the sofa in the main level kitchen/dining/living room! It has been up for about 6 months and every single time I look at it I still get chills (in a good way). I absolutely love the painting that is the main image on his website too. https://www.duyhuynh.com/ We just finished remodeling the entire house so we have been working on acquiring art for each room. Last year for Valentine's Day my husband and I each picked out a print to have framed and I picked that Monet 'In the Garden with Dahlias' you posted above. That one is hanging in the downstairs living room. 😊
Darce MissyWeitzel Oh that is so neat! I loved the Monet garden- so peaceful and pretty. It must be so nice to look at in winter especially! That is a great Valentines gift pick❤
Ailhad Darce That's so cool Darcy! Like minds.... BTW, the Monet and the Caillebotte are hanging at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, DC. I took pictures of both last September and thought "wouldn't it be interesting to find out other artists who painted dahlias....
Darce Ailhad Speaking of other artists who loved painting dahlias we are going to have to give it up for Renoir as a dahlia addict OG😉 He loved the tawny autumnal colours best it seems
Ailhad Darce This painting is even more gorgeous in person - or it might have been recently restored. Dahlias, Garden at Petit Gennevilliers, oil on canvas, 1893, GUSTAVE CAILLEBOTTE French, 1848-1894, Gift of the Scharffenberger Family 2016.48.1
Darce Ailhad Thank you SO much for posting these! I would love to see them in person . The Caillebotte is my favorite for two reasons - I have serious green house envy and that adorable little dog. The colors are both chalky and clear at the same time- It’s amazing and you have inspired me to plan for a one day visit
Darce Can’t you see Renoir with a glass of absinthe -furiously refreshing his computer as he fights in the Great Dahlia Wars to snag a beloved rarity or a hot new Hollyhill or Bloomquist intro?
Ailhad Darce WOW - Renoir's dahlias are gorgeous! He must have had access to quite a nice collection of dahlia varieties - more than a 100 years ago!
Darce Even the simple shapes of single dahlias attracted him - as long as they were a glorious shade of of orangey-red-coral
Darce blown_dry I think we need a Ken Burns documentary on the Great Dahlia Wars of Acquisition 🤣 Morgan Freeman narrating and reading entries about dahlia buying hits and misses from dahlia addict forum in a somber voice!
Bessie This is the watercolor painting that hypnotized me, and made me curious to seek the beauty of Dahlias in my garden.
