I know people were wondering a while ago about when JS was going to open. I don't know if he had a soft open that I missed or..... anywho, I emailed him this week asking about a particular dahlia and he said he was sold out. (though thanks @blown_dry, I found one other obscure little grower and bought their last one!)

I only emailed him because another person in a Facebook group said she'd successfully requested tubers from him by email. Then he was still sold out of half of my requests. This was a week and a half ago or so.

I spoke with him in person early February. He said that the mad rush of previous couple of years had been frustrating because people he’d sold to for 20 years weren’t even able to get a foot in the door. He didn’t say so explicitly, but I got the impression he was considering only private sales or a very limited late opening?

He did not ever indicate an opening on his website. He did a bunch of updates to the listings in the first half of January, but I forgot about it when he stopped updating.

Having a website at all is becoming a hassle if one has enough demand without one, I get it. I have no demand so I need a website. 🙂

Today's Most Favored Sale was Roving Radish. I arrived five hours after open and was still able to purchase something. I was happy to grab Ed Kuhn for my bicolor patch and Oreti Duke for no patch in particular, but maybe it wants to be neighbors with my Irish Imp.

Got my first shipping notification today! Rivers is on the way! I’m glad the weather cooperated for my panicked unthinking entry of March 1 during checkout… 😜

I had a couple of sales bookmarked this weekend and in typical fashion I checked out with different stuff than I intended, and mostly not from the shops I bookmarked. Was looking for: Chimacum Luke, a Princess Beatrix cutting, Elizabeth Mellinger. What I got: Chimacum Night, Chimacum Sam, Skipley Road Jan, Clearview Erin, Missis Amy. I don't even intend to grow open centers and I have 4.

Chimacum Luke is a dazzling good looker. Tubers not so much. The originators of the Chimacum flowers, the Smiths, were breeders of daffodils also. Their second best seedlings were better than 90% of other breeder's best. However, tuber keeping was a problem with many of them.

I just ordered two RC of Vecca Lucia. I hope it's as pretty as the pictures. Sounds like it might not be a great tuber keeper.

blown_dry This was one of the first dahlias I ordered for 2024, from FGL Dahlias in Quebec. I hope it shows up ok. Also from him: Camano Susan, Bloomquist Dandelion, Maks Betty Lynn and Wyn's Mardi Gras. Wyn's Mardi Gras looks really fun. I haven't seen Camano Susan elsewhere this year and I hope it's as pretty as the photo. Weirdly though the other photos I have found show it very bright coral red.

Lou Paradise bred Vecca Lucia. I have met Lou several times over the years. He is a very meticulous detailed person. He did the record keeping for the American Dahlia Society Classification book for many years. He invented the "new" numbering system that they use now.

Teddahlia I know about the variety because I joined the San Leandro Dahlia Society where he is a member. Someone said they asked him about getting it, and he told them he wasn't growing it anymore so I had thought it might be extinct. The "Eden" varieties are his and others.

blown_dry speaking of Vecca Lucia, I thought I had it wishlisted in DahliaAddict and has seen it as an “orphaned” variety. So I went to check if it was for sale anywhere.

So my orphaned wishlisted dahlia says “Veca Lucia”, but an active variety shows as “Vecca Lucia”. I’m assuming this is an accidental double entry, not two distinct dahlias? (Thought I should make sure before I abandon my orphan…)

Because I am in CA orders are starting to come in, but it's constantly pouring rain outside so I dislike the idea of potting them up. I'll just have to get over it.

@blown_dry I can't wait to see pictures. I'm SOOOO excited to grow Eden Talos this year! @Teddahlia did you, or maybe someone else?, mention that he bred Elsie? Would love to try that one if I can find it!

I haven't purchased from them before and I see the reviews are a little mixed. Unfortunately for me I make a lot of risky bets when it comes to getting dahlias I might not get elsewhere. I've made purchases from two farms in Canada and one in Latvia that were willing to do phyto. Not the Latvian sellers on Etsy, that's a whole nother bag of chips.

I noticed the Elkhart Dahlia association is selling some tuber lots on eBay. It says local pickup but then in the description it says if you ask nicely they might ship.

I've ordered from there over the years. Tubers arrive in good condition and grow well.

blown_dry I did last year and the tubers were great but quite large. They were also generous in that several had a couple viable tubers together.
