DarcyD On the flip side, Julie’s shipping was cheap (by today’s standard).
10.40 is less than what the USPS charges.
Someone bought a Kelgai Ann tuber from Stark and the shipping (23.60) was more than
the tuber ($20). I definitely would have abandoned that cart. Glad they’re refunding a portion.

Yeah. I lost all my good ones, and only had two ordinary ones left so when I saw the shipping I jumped ship…pun intended 😂. Then, read later it was an error. Wasn’t meant to be I guess. It’s ok. It’s been a great week. I hope to have some luck when they have the cutting sale.

I missed Joel's Favorite and Czarny of course. I had both in my cart with Coseytown DeVille within a few seconds but only got DeVille.

Not really intentionally but it's becoming more intentional now, I have ordered enough for a standalone bicolor/tricolor and variegated patch in my yard. Coseytown DeVille, WB's Misbehavin, Cakeman, Nonette, Hollyhill Kris Kringle, Hollyhill Snowfire, Hollyhill Pink Tigress, Hapet Austrian Lace.

But as usual my favorite acquisition lately was a swap and not a buy. I got a Tioga Seahawk in trade. Love the chance to grow a new Tioga.

Jack Adams and his ex-wife Madelyn Giesert "bred" the Tioga varieties. I believe they got the seeds from the late Cyril Higgo of South Africa. All people mentioned here are dead. The "ex wife" appellation was used for Madelyn as their split was not amicable. When I last talked to Jack he was very certain it was not an amicable split. Very, very certain.

My big thing I was after this morning was Fun Fair which sold out very quickly, but I put only that in my cart and was successful. I love ruffly blooms! I was personally dismayed to see the supplier promoting that specific variety on IG, and I didn't do myself any favor by mentioning it in the News due to name issues, so I didn't wait around.
Someone left a review expressing their disappointment in their experience shopping another, highly-anticipated sale within minutes of that sale opening. I feel for them, but I cannot make the review live as I don't post negative reviews about the pains and perils of dahlia mania.

Juliarugula yes, please share photos, Amanda. The colors in your pic are much softer compared to some others I’ve seen, that had a lot more saturated color.

calico20hill yes, PM me if you don't get Wyoming Wedding from a nearby friend. I'm cutting it from my grow plan this year and will have a few extra tubers. I have 2 other similar color and size dahlias that performed a lot better for me.

AndreaB I noticed the same thing. I feel pretty certain that this has that deep rose pigment that fades quickly in the sun and the other photos show it pre-fade. I like that in a dahlia though. AC Ring of Fire is another one.

The famous botanist Lawrence in the 1920s and 1930s noted that there were several versions of dahlia pigment that fade. A red one he called pale anthocyanin is actually scarlet red and is brighter(before it fades.) than the more stable reds. Most dahlia breeders avoid the fading versions but the brightest dahlia flowers are some that have the pigment.

I have a past lifetime that included hair/cosmetology school. I vaguely remember that red-based color pigments faded more readily than others because of the shape and size of the red color molecules. I wonder if any of this crosses over?

Krista It's still common for many red pigments to fade the fastest. Visible light is radiation. I think it's a little wacky that we have these radiation sensors that our brain uses to map our surroundings via the waves bouncing off of it. Anyway, Items that are bouncing away only the least energetic, safest visible radiation (reds) are therefore absorbing all of the more energetic and damaging wavelengths (the rest of the spectrum of visible radiation). I understand it's not just a radiation issue but also some of the more common red pigments are especially vulnerable for structural reasons at the molecular level.

Well, that is an interesting question and one to ask a chemist. As a person who only took one year of chemistry in college, I am not the one to ask. My son is a working chemist at an analytical chemical lab. I bet he would say that some versions of anthocyanin have stronger chemical bonds that do not break down as easily. Hair dye may use an entirely different chemical.
What color from the ADS chart is most likely to fade?

Teddahlia I’m not sure which one would actually be most likely to fade if it were a synthetic hair color. It’s been over 20 years since cosmetology school! If I were to guess today though, I’d choose maybe DR-2. The deeper shades would have more blue and the lighter shades may have more yellow stacked in to help fill. The truer reds might have less building pigments that would serve to hold the red color and prevent it from falling out of the hair cuticle. Maybe? I hope there’s someone on here who has more recent education or a better understanding and can fact-check what I’m saying. 🤨

Krista i'm no chemist or hairdresser, but I love red dahlias, have tried many, and have noticed that the true reds - the red-reds- don't fade.

Reds with more blue in them seem to fade more quickly in the hottest sunniest weather. I suppose they need more shade.

AndreaB Darn, I missed it! He had some great ones too! I guess all the people with the bots programmed scored on this one, as not many people are shopping for dahlias at 4 AM.
