MIDahlias There are already some great suggestions here, just adding my method for variety! I grew mostly all in grow bags so not certain this will crossover to pots.
I loved lopping the plant off at the soil level and just dumping the bag upside down into a concrete mixing tub. For new-to-me plants, after dumping and confirming no obvious signs of gall, I poured the soil into a pile I plan to distribute into vegetable beds next year.
I sprayed clumps off across our lawn as Teddahlia explained. We go clamming out on the coast often and have footed waders though . I did consider wearing them while washing clumps this year? Maybe I’ll give that a whirl next year — ended up just getting drenched again wearing jeans, just like past years. 😅
