Tough day on the plants yesterday --- 93 degrees, not a cloud in the sky with a 24 mph wind (with 35 mph gusts) all day ! Sure did dry things out !

I am finally getting some first blooms. The good news is that none of the plants look damaged by the heat.My first blooms are nice but no special seedling blooms yet.

Supposed to get up to 98 here in northern Indiana today. I’m cranky about it. I’m ready for fall.

At least if gets all the way to 100 I can finally earn my “Toasty” Garmin activity badge.

Juliarugula I feel for you! I think we need an emoji that shows sweating and an exasperated look. It was 94 in the shade here yesterday, with 10% humidity. I don't tolerate it, even to simply collect pollen, and polinate select flowers.

We are going to get up in the 90's by later in the week as well. The heat starts building today so I plan to get outside real soon before it is full sun in the garden.

Margaret covered a bunch of flowers to pollinate yesterday. They need no attention for many days and we are going to have a heat spell for a few days too. I bet they will be fine right after the heat spell. In California many climates allow pollinating flowers into October. Many of the all time best giant dahlias were bred in Bessie's climate by the Almands. One my all time favorites Show-N-Tell was bred there(however it does not make any seeds). I met a lady who knew the Almands and she had many good things to say about them. The biggest Dahlia I ever grew was Almand's Supreme.

It’s a bit cooler in Chicago than they had forecast. 93 not 95 and thankfully there have been a few clouds. I watered into dark hours last night to help them out. They look ok today so far. I sprayed them down once today and think I’m done. 🔥

DarcyD yes, I think we only briefly got up to 97, two degrees cooler than expected. But best of all, it finally rained! Yay!

We’ve got a high of 65 today in Seattle, overcast and damp — but my dahlias are in Yakima. Still, high for today there is a balmy 73 degrees! Washington’s outta the loop. The heat loop, that is.

Krista Yes, here north of Portland we were also in the low to mid 70's and both my dahlia and I thrive at those temperatures! I Jut hope we can get long enough now to set seeds! I think most of my plants have opened at least their first flowers and I am loving my garden so much! Other people I am sure love their show flowers as much but I love the surprise of all the seedlings opening even more.And I love picking them and testing out as cut lfowers by taking them into the house with me...even to taking them to my (cat free) bedroom at night to keep the flowers from being bit or wrestled with.

We have also returned to the extreme heat and humidity. The dahlias are budding nicely, and blooming well, at least in terms of this awful summer that we have experienced. I keep meaning to take pictures to share, but they’re just not pretty enough…yet!
I’ve seen dahlias from local flower farmers that look better than mine. I know it’s possible, but I’m not sure if I know what I could have done to mitigate the conditions of 2024.

JessieC It’s been one rough year!! That’s for sure. I lost at least 1/3 and probably more like 1/2 between weeks of early rains, then heat wave, and holy moly the bunnies this year! They’ve chomped SO many down to soil level. And, way more bugs (including many I’ve never seen before) due to our extreme mild winter last year. Now I’m looking at my survivors in admiration and thinking how lucky I am that so many made it through all that.

Our weather is uneventful compared to yours. A bit too hot sometimes and perhaps a little rain would be nice but I cannot complain this year. Dahlias planted after June 10th or so are starting to bloom. The later we plant the later they bloom but one week late equals about 2 weeks later blooms . Our stuff that was planted the last week (about June 20) is just starting to bloom now.

We are supposed to hit 100 degrees tomorrow and almost that hot the next day, then cool back down. My beds should be fine on automatic drip. I might have some burned foliage and blooms but I don't have shade cloth. Mr Calico has had too much going on health wise and arthritis wise to try to get shade cloth up.

Thermometer just hit 100 at 3 PM. I have not been outside all day because I do not do well in these temperatures. I hope Wenatchee it not too hot for all you convention goers! It can be pretty warm when we are only in the 80's here. I sent Hubby out to pick our gravenstein apples this morning so they would not bake on the tree like last heat wave. I would rather do them in the oven with cinnamon and sugar on them! It is a minidwarf tree so the whole crop fit in a super big bowl.

I just checked the Wenatchee weather for the national show. Only 100F each day.

I just checked our weather forcast and it looks like this could be the warmest day we have left. Its a muggy, grayish day and 83 degrees.iI the next 10 days the temps drop into the 60's and that takes us into late September. We have enough smoke in the air that it has kept the temperature down a few degrees today I suspect but I surely am looking forward to sunny days with cool evenings. Not frosty evenings, just cool evenings!

I am making my official dahlia map of what is blooming where and pulling out those seedlings that are of no earthly good except to the bees.

We've had some pretty decent rainstorms here the past month. The plants were looking happier & healthier then a hailstorm came through last week and just leveled out quite a few plants and destroyed tons of blooms.
