Winter has arrived

KitCMC We dodged that bullet! Never cooled down enough to turn the rain to snow.
We would’ve gotten 9” otherwise. Supposed to have an accumulation on Friday and then our temps will be dipping just like yours.

It’s a balmy 38 degrees right now but the forecast for Seattle calls for temp-lows dropping into the teens by Friday and snow on Saturday!

Brrrrrr!

Our first round came last night without an inch of white, but it will probably melt off today. THen the Real Weather arrives about Friday. (Maybe). It looks like the forecast is swinging back toward the deep freeze.

Noni: What a difference of about 30 miles makes. No snow here and was 36 degrees at about 7AM.

Teddahlia It is mind boggling! I think maybe because we have our backsides right up against the coastal range where as you are farther down the valley ad farther away from the mountains to the west. I think knowing both your weather and mine gives us interesting perimeters on the weather that is happening.

MY fathe- in-law was a brilliant weather man but unfortuantely did not talk much about it and our kids were pretty young when he passed away. I don't think Howard is nearly as fascinated by it as I am. Weather was always of concern to my farm family.

And here we are with no chimney for our garage wood stove because te fellow who was going to fix it isn't answering phone calls....

AndreaB hopefully Friday’s snow will insulate perennials & woodies from the cold. As of now we’re looking at anywhere from 5 - 8 more inches on Friday. I’m making room in a cool, basement closet in case the tubers need to come in from the garage 🌨️🌬️

No snow here either. Just west of Detroit. The chatter was school closings yesterday morning because of a huge storm coming. It never made it here and was 46 degrees at midnight last night.
My mom did get 10" 3.5 hours north of me and she has no power.

MIDahlias yeah, I’m busy doing laundry today in anticipation of a power outage tomorrow. We’ll be under a 24-hr storm watch Friday-Saturday. Hope this next wave doesn’t interrupt your Mom’s restoration.

Krista brrr! That’s seem really cold for your area. Do you guys get some snow most winters?

KitCMC Same! I didn’t plan to store mine in the garage, but we’ve had such a mild Winter (so far) I never moved them. Ready for Plan B if necessary 😊
Think we’re getting the same storm you are. Calling for 6-8”. But, our forecaster called it an “Oreo”. Snow, then rain, then more snow. And we all know, freezing rain is the worst.

KitCMC Yes, we’ve lately been getting a sprinkle at some point each year — temps don’t tend to linger below freezing to keep it around for long though!

Well, surprise...the wood stove in the garage is toast. I am telling husband that we definitely need to replace it, as all his hobby stuff , like his electric trains, etc are out in the garage, as well as my tuber storage. Its a huge garage meant for a utility truck. I think the tubers WILL be spending the weekend in the house.

calico20hill when I thought of your heating dilemma, the first thing that came into my "fix it" mentality was to use a heating blanket over and around the tubers. Just warm enough... But not too warm. Some pretty cheap ones can be found on Amazon.

Tuesday was nasty here in SW MI. This is my last week of taking my son 45 min away to drivers training classes 4x a week. I wanted him to experience winter driving in his class. The weather had been super mild with no snow the last two weeks but thankfully he had his last scheduled drive with an instructor Tuesday just as the roads started to get bad. Then a couple hours later after the class portion I got to white knuckle us home in a full blown blizzard. He finishes his last class tonight and gets his level 1 learning license. He is super excited to drive but now they're calling for 15 + inches of snow tomorrow into Saturday and there's no way in hell I'm gonna let him drive me around in my car this weekend. I wish we had a winter beater. 😅

Temps looking seriously low as we get closer to the time line..and our wood stove in the garage apparently has rusted out from the chimney problem we did not know about. I will be hauling the tubers into the house today. I few loads in our little red wagon should do it and the garage is close to the house. That reminds me to move those heirloom Christmas cactuses I inherited from my mom and pretty much just keep them alive without paying them much attention. (They were gorgeous under her care)...but she didn't do dahlias.

I am going to move the tubers from the garage to the basement today. I have not done that in 3-4 years but the forecast is just too cold this year. I am 98% done dividing. Lots of tallying will be done to get final tuber counts. Another possibility is that an ice storm will take out our power and that is a real threat as a wet storm from the Pacific Ocean is coming in and the giant cold front from Canada is going to meet it here in Oregon City. The result may
be snow but more likely freezing rain.

AndreaB Finger crossed you avoid freezing rain! I’ve never heard anyone say “oreo” storm before, but it’s an apt description!
