Yes, I do get Allen's flowers through Cowlitz. Teresa is a friend and long time mentor but I still had trouble 2 yrs ago getting through the masses to make my order. Maybe there will be a chance at it through some club sale if I don't score with Teresa. If all else fails maybe I can root a cutting from some luckier person around here. We need a dahlia Santa who delivers tubers to adults who have been good.....and who knows how to keep them warm when flying through the snow!

Juliarugula there are quite a few Swan Island originations that look so much prettier in other people's pictures. A lot of theirs are taken in full sun. I'm kinda shocked they don't have professional photos with good lighting since they spend a lot on catalogs and online advertising! I ordered Fairytale for spring after seeing 2 other people post pics of it. That one is worth a Google search if you haven't seen other people's pictures! I'm not bashing Swan Island at all. They're doing my wallet a favor anyway.

So I think the fourth photo I posted (orange semi-cactus) is Allen’s Sorbet. I’m really not sure about number 15 and 22. Maybe 15 is TJ’s Nala? Maybe 22 is CV AM?

The ADS has 2023 trial garden listings up now, but I know some of the intros that were at the Midwest garden don’t have scores. Do they not list an intro if it doesn’t score high enough to pass? There are a few that aren’t listed that I would be very surprised to find out scored low (nearly certain we had Irish Moon, for example, which appeared pretty perfect to my (admittedly untrained)eye).

If an entry does not pass, the name is not revealed. I personally do not know the names of the low scoring entries. I do like it when as a judge, I do not know who entered the flower.

Even after the fact? I guess because then it can’t prejudice you towards future flowers from the same hybridizer?

I obviously know very little about judging, but I’m curious…. Are there reasons why an otherwise excellent flower would score low? I really am curious why Irish Moon wouldn’t have scored well at our garden. To my inexperienced eye, it had fantastic, consistent form, strong stems, bloomed heavily all season long, had clean foliage. The only thing I can think of was that the yellow color was on the lighter side? Just curious…

The Elkhart Dahlia Society does a yearly talk at the garden where they go over how the seedlings are judged. Unfortunately, I’ve had scheduling conflicts both years I’ve been a member and haven’t gotten to attend yet. Maybe this year…

Irish Moon MB Y was the top scoring flower in the Portland Trial Garden and it was not close. Remember"things happen" and some entries get virus and some refuse to grow and some look different in different climates. Breeders are probably happy with the secrecy of failed entries. Having said that, a breeder who entered a cut flower type hoping it would score to enhance sales may want the name of the flower revealed. There is no rule that the breeder cannot state what flower was his in the garden. Another fairly common occurrence is the breeder sends the wrong tubers. We have entered many years and many entries. This year for the second time in our careers we sent the wrong tubers. The first time, Hollyhill Gloria was not our intended entry and it did well and went on to be a popular flower. One likes to offer excuses for such things and in that case Margaret's father was dying from cancer and were not on top of our game. This year we entered the wrong one in the Portland Trial Garden and it did not pass but received " I want it" from several people. What was the reason? It was a last minute decision to enter HH Fingerpaint into a trial garden and the wrong one got sent and the wrong one was grown in our garden too although we had lots of the right one too.

Interesting - I had wondered about this too. There was an entry at Bonneyville where one of the three tubers was obviously a different variety than the other two. I assume that ends up being a disqualified entry?

No, if only one is the wrong one, the breeder is contacted and the wrong one removed and two plants are used to judge the entry. If two plants are wrong it is disqualified.

I watched the Canby trial garden video, and it references the "baker's dozen" that passed, but it looks like there were 14 that passed at that trial garden according to the list on the ADS website. Does anyone know why would they leave one out?
