Trial Gardens?

Are we “allowed” to discuss this years trial garden entries yet? I saw that the Canby garden posted a video of all the varieties that passed, but I haven’t seen anything from the others. I know we’re not really supposed to reveal hybridizers until judging is done. Not sure if we have the all clear now?

There were a few I took photos of at our local garden that I’m curious to find out who might be releasing them. I thought some of you west-coasters might be privy to insider info…

Juliarugula All the awards would have been given by now. I haven't been an ADS member for a few years but I think most years the December ADS Bulletin included the listing of the trial garden and seedling bench score winners. Also, many commercial grower advertise their new intros in that bulletin. Any ADS member here would know for sure.

That’s great! Thanks! I’d love to see photos to go with the names. Although I think (from the Canby video) Skipley Road Sherry was one of my favorites at the Midwest garden.

It looks like the first one is Allen’s Cascadia, which won the Hart Medal! It’s stunning! It’s classified as a B, but I would have guessed an A. It had a very large presence.

Juliarugula I believe Ted posted a photo of what May very well have been Clearview Ginger a while back - not positive which channel unfortunately. I think I may have snapped a photo of it in the Tacoma trial garden too, I’ll see if I can find mine!

Juliarugula I am utterly in love with Allen's Cascadia! Even if I don't grow fimbrited blooms in my seedling garden. This one might have to grow in my orchard on the other side of the house and half way up the hill!

calico20hill do Allen Manuel’s intros usually go through Cowlitz?

I seem to recall not being very successful at beating the mob at the Cowlitz sale last year…. (I’m sure I’ll give it a shot again this year though - maybe I’ll have better luck!)

Yes, I do get Allen's flowers through Cowlitz. Teresa is a friend and long time mentor but I still had trouble 2 yrs ago getting through the masses to make my order. Maybe there will be a chance at it through some club sale if I don't score with Teresa. If all else fails maybe I can root a cutting from some luckier person around here. We need a dahlia Santa who delivers tubers to adults who have been good.....and who knows how to keep them warm when flying through the snow!

River’s Can’t Elope?

Skipley Road Sherry, I think. It was brilliant - deep bright color that didn’t fade at all.

I think this one is Tuscany from Swan Island. I didn’t even recognize it from their website photos, but the YouTube video of their new released looks correct. I couldn’t believe how faded and brown the photo they used in their catalog was - it really has so much going on in the color variation.

Juliarugula there are quite a few Swan Island originations that look so much prettier in other people's pictures. A lot of theirs are taken in full sun. I'm kinda shocked they don't have professional photos with good lighting since they spend a lot on catalogs and online advertising! I ordered Fairytale for spring after seeing 2 other people post pics of it. That one is worth a Google search if you haven't seen other people's pictures! I'm not bashing Swan Island at all. They're doing my wallet a favor anyway.

It won't let me actually edit my post. I tried to post (I assume) they spend a lot on advertising in brackets and it just hid that and put the rest in italics.
Also I meant Facebook search, not Google for the Fairytale pics! 😊

Honnat I don’t see trial garden results for 2023 posted yet, but I may be looking in the wrong place. Hoping someone else can confirm!

So I think the fourth photo I posted (orange semi-cactus) is Allen’s Sorbet. I’m really not sure about number 15 and 22. Maybe 15 is TJ’s Nala? Maybe 22 is CV AM?

The ADS has 2023 trial garden listings up now, but I know some of the intros that were at the Midwest garden don’t have scores. Do they not list an intro if it doesn’t score high enough to pass? There are a few that aren’t listed that I would be very surprised to find out scored low (nearly certain we had Irish Moon, for example, which appeared pretty perfect to my (admittedly untrained)eye).
