Cactus-Semi cactus:
What factors influence the depth? Our cactus types are as many as 8 generations of breeding and hopefully they get better each generation. We breed for flower depth.
"However in my garden, my varieties can be shallower and front-facing." Top winning show varieties have deep flowers and good angle on the stem.
Are they easy to grow to perfection? You need lots of show growing skills. In no order : good stock, proper fertilizer(and pH) ,water and sunlight, proper plant control meaning stopping, disbranching, and especially dis budding (and not just one down) , shading at the right time, skills on timing the maturity of the entry and good harvest techniques, including what time of day to harvest, preservatives in the water, heat treating,. good skills on transporting of blooms and lastly one of the most important of all, skills of properly tying up your plants in the garden and the best show people often do not mention this in their talks(on purpose?). I have attended about 10 sessions where top show people explain "how they do it" and the way they explain it ,
a second grade school child could do it. I think they leave most of it out, some on purpose but mostly they do not realize that is the attention to detail in every aspect of growing that they do so well.
