Emilyp I am growing Allen’s Alley Cat and it is very not super orange. My first bloom was a hot mess but I’ve got another one coming (that’s looking to be very similar in color as this one) and can post a photo when it does.

I visited Allen’s Dahlias in August and his stand of AACs were also light in color like mine. Yours matches the images on Cowlitz River’s site though.

Krista Thank you Krista! Mine is definitely more Heathcliff than Garfield. It is in a very shady spot, I wonder if that makes a difference.

Emilyp I almost forgot to post this! Bloom #2 wasn’t the beautiful deep orange yours is - I will definitely try Allen’s Alley Cat in a shadier spot next year!

MIne looked very much like the first picture... I wasn't particularly drawn to it and that may be that they faded out. It had some stiff competition where I had it planted and I think my eyes were drawn to Lote (From Cowlitz River Dahlias) mostly. If it made good tubers I will try it again next year in a different spot.

Krista The first year I grew Alpen Sundown I was smitten. I lost it and replaced it, but it just didn’t seem the same after the honeymoon. Yours is gorgeous, Krista.

Alpen Sundown: Glad to see some of Bill Mclaren's Alpen varieties are still around. Steve must be proud of his father's groundbreaking breeding and the outstanding book he wrote called the Encyclopedia of Dahlias. I would like to hear what it was like growing up in Montana on a dahlia farm.

If you like this you may like Night Silence. I saw it in real life recently and it has a very similar vibe, but more antique. The center of Night silence is nearly black.

I could have cried cutting down Manor Jayne today - she was sooo pretty. Such a late bloomer - this was only the second bloom. I’m going to have to see if I can get her to bloom a little earlier from cuttings next year.

Krista no, she’s usually solid black, and the first bloom was solid. She’s just doing that color break thing that a lot of black dahlias do when it starts getting chilly.

Oh I didn’t know this about black dahlias - I’m just this year exploring both white and very dark varieties so this is great to know. I really like the color break - it’s so formal and dramatic with the dark-on-dark effect.

Sorry, I don’t. I’ll be storing a pot tuber and hopefully taking cuttings in the Spring.
