JessieC I grow Cecil and Snoho Doris which are also super hard to tell apart early in the season if just looking at the flowers. Plants themselves are quite different. I keep both because they both have different good qualities. Snoho Doris has nicer stems and is a nicer plant but it changes color a lot later in the season. Some of those late blooms are kinda blotchy looking, which isn't a favorite. It's in the ADS though and can win at shows. Cecil is not in the ADS, but it blooms earlier and gives more total stems in a season and the color stays a lot more consistent.

I write back before and lost my reply! Thanks for the information. I love your pics of Cecil! The next few blooms of Mystique look better. Here are some more winners:

Penhill Watermelon is the big one here. As promised, the plant towers over the others.

A few Rose Toscano blooms here. That one is also a great plant in my hot and humid climate. Blyton Softer Gleam and Coseytown Babycakes are in here, both still in an “ugly adolescent” phase 😅

My most anticipated so far—HH Miss White. The first handful of blooms is as close to perfect as I can imagine. Long stems, and that tiny hint of purple is just amazing!

JessieC Has anyone ever experienced this? My much anticipated Mystique just started to bloom and the petals just seem to fall off. None of the others are doing that. Any ideas?

The cause of"shattering" or "premature petal drop" on dahlias doesn't seem to be well understood (from the literature I have read). There are varieties that seem to always shatter, varieties that shatter under some conditions, and varieties that never drop their back florets. It sounds like Mystique must belong to the group that shatters under certain conditions. I have a few varieties that shatter under certain conditions but I have never been able to pin down exactly what those conditions are. I once thought it might be high day temps,or high night temps, or high humidity, or low humidity, or dry plants, or mite infestation, or fungicide sprays, or etc. etc. There might be more than one cause. If you figure it out, let me know!☺

Clearview Neive is blooming today - what is causing the rows of green petals between each row of regular petals? They’re emerging between each row through the whole bloom. Also, my Vesuvius is blooming.

Krista keep the photos coming! I like seeing Dahlias in a garden setting. Sometimes sellers show only the very best of the flower.

Bessie I’m so happy to hear you say this, I feel the same way. I want to see all the one-offs and idiosyncrasies too and it’s reassuring to find out others are interested to see them as well!

Bessie It looks like that from this photo, for sure! As soon as this bloom began to open it was light in color. The bud behind sure looks darker though so I’ll keep an eye on it to see if that one blooms darker?

Jennie is named after the late Phil Traff's mother. I met her a couple of times at shows back when and she could have won any "sweet , nice mother" contest. It won best in show at the largest dahlia show ever in America, in the early 90s and that was in Vancouver, BC. The flower that won was much, much darker on the tips and edges than in your picture.

Better picture as far as color but still not as intense as the one that won.

KA's Keltie Cherry has a color that is so striking in person! It is bright but dark at the same time and it really grabs my attention from a distance. This is the first bloom so I expect the center to be better later.

Tahoma Early Dawn is so pretty! The buds start out looking quite buttery yellow so I wasn't excited at all and did not watch closely in anticipation. When the first bloom opened it really gave me a great surprise! These are the surprises I dream about in January. 😊

Penhill Watermelon!!! Amazing blooms at barely 80 days. As promised, the plant is huge, and I’m expecting a few more blooms this week. It’s my first really big flower, and I’m so pleased 🤗

River’s Phoenix is a bit downward facing and so far every bloom has a hard center, but I 100% love it anyway. Super bright and fiery!

Happy to finally get some blooms from Hollyhill Wicked Witch - last year was a bust. It seems to be blooming with about half fully variegated and half yellow with only the tiniest of speckles.

AC Cowlitz is big and bold. It’s a deep intense purple that the photo didn’t capture well - reminds me of Seabeck’s Hilda.

WB’s Molten Lava is awesome and I’m so glad I got it. Really nice full ball shape, loads of petals, long stems, NEON orange (again, the photo isn’t capturing the color as I’d like).

Juliarugula Gorgeous blooms! I hear you on the lack of accuracy with colors translating but your photos are still lovely. Your HH Wicked Witch is fabulous. I started this season thinking I wasn’t into the variegated blooms and I’ve already done a complete 180, I’m shocked by how exciting I’m finding them suddenly!
