I will preface this with, I am a total newbie to breeding. I have very little clue as to what makes a good show flower partly because showing doesn't really interest me. I mainly grow for cut flowers and I realize I still have a ton to learn! With that said, I would love to share some of my favorite first year (first ever) seedlings.

My seedling below is on the left with Bloomquist York on the right.

KristinS I really like all of your seedlings, but I agree that last mustard yellow and red is particularly beautiful! I love mustard yellow!

Same color. Show flowers can be nice but most of us grow dahlias for their beauty and that is a personal thing. Margaret looked over my shoulder and said she likes the color of your seedling.

Teddahlia I posted more. I am still figuring out how to use message board. 😅 I am glad there are others growing for their beauty and not simply perfection as defined by the showing rules.

Very nice set of seedlings. Last one with dark reverse is "cool" (using my old time hippy vocabulary) .

Teddahlia Thank you! Any camera suggestions for picking up the correct coloring? That one in particular I can’t get the color to show correctly. It is soooo red and soooo mustard yellow it looks unreal, but I can’t for the life of me get the color to pick up correctly!

Odd colored flowers seem to photograph better if they have another lighter colored flower next to it or behind it. Use your cell phone for the picture and cell phone pictures have lots of built in post picture processing to make them look good. When I try to improve cell phone pictures in photoshop they are already processed to look good and more processing usually does not work. My Canon camera does not process pictures that much and I can usually improve the picture. I use the cell phone for most pictures these days but when motivated will take some very nice pictures with my Canon camera. The Canon camera pictures are better if you use the right settings but usually that involves shooting with several different settings and that takes time. Cell Phone pictures are quick and easy.

Teddahlia My Canons are even worse than my iPhone at capturing colors. 😅 You’re so right, phones are a lot more convenient. I wonder what a white background would do. I might try it next time I’m having problems. Unfortunately, I hardly have any white flowers this year. I have Salish Snow Day and Hollyhill Miss White out there, but they haven’t bloomed yet.

I really like the gold with dark red reverse! The dark color reverse gives it. lot of visual depth as well as being fun colors to work with. I find a lot of cell phone pics need the color warmed up and made deeper to match the flower. I always edit the colors to what my eyes saw, not how it photographed.

KitCMC Thank you! I am waiting for another bloom on that one. I will save it for next year since I don’t have many whites. I’m looking forward to seeing how these grow as stand alone dahlias and not just seedlings crammed together to see what they look like in year one!

KristinS , I'm very impressed with your seedlings. This is my first year growing dahlia seedlings too 😊. Did you keep track of the seed parents or pollen parents? The parentage of seedlings is sometimes not shared by professional breeders, but I'd love to know if you don't want to keep it a secret. It would appear that Bloomquist York was a parent of the first seedling posted. Have you watched the YouTube videos Katherine Albrecht has done where she critiques her seedlings? I've learned a lot hearing her discuss why she is culling or keeping a particular seedling.

Bessie Thank you! Breeding is fun. I hope this is just the beginning for me. I’m completely obsessed! I just love going out to see what new ones have opened up.

I do know some of my seed parents, but I only got Bloomquist York this year so I haven’t used it as a seed parent at all!
