New Forum Questions and Discussion
This looks really nice, thank you! It makes so much sense for this to live in the dahliaddict universe. I love the sort & follow options. Itβs so nice to have text formatting, attachments, linking, and lists when replying! What is the check mark on the main page next to the refresh button?
can I use colors?
Wow - this layout is really nice!
Congratulations!
At first I tried to log in here with my dahliaaddict PW - but I guess this is separate?

KitCMC The check mark will mark all Discussions "read".
Edit:
Forgot to mention- For formatting, it supports both BBCode Official (Wikipedia) and Markdown.
Edit 2:
Updated the link to the BBCode reference. BBCode.org is down, so I replaced the link with one to the Wikipedia tag reference.
Edit 3:
BBCode.org is back...
Ailhad Yes, it is completely separate. In the interest of getting it up as quickly as possible I didn't attempt to write a plugin to authenticate using DAHLIAaddict credentials.

Ahh - that will come I handy! This is great, thank you!
Ah! I just caught on to the 'reply' to individual post function. So, instead of adding a new post like I'm doing now, you hit 'reply' to the individual post you're responding to. Sweet!
I have to say, its really nice to be able to slide the cursor to the left and see the forum options.
At first, I thought the topics were going to be listed chronologically. Looks like they're listed by order they were added by Admin. It would be cool to be able to pick/choose what shows up; say, the 'followed' discussions at the top and recently commented topics chronologically below the followed threads.

It looks like there's a menu top left above the threads where you can choose the order. I have mine set to "latest" which is how the old forum worked. It looks like the thread keeps the icon of the person that started it... hmm. No DMs but you can create "private discussions" that only those you select can see. I don't know if admins can see directly, but they are not encrypted so the info is in the database.
Thank you blown_dry and mr_blown_dry !
Your efforts to provide this dahlia forum is very much appreciated.
I see where you mean now... if I click on the 'Growing Dahlias' title on top left, it brings all the active threads up, and there's the sorting option at the top. Seems like it defaults to 'latest' after you click away. Wish there was a 'favorites' sorting available. I would swear the threads were sorted differently a bit ago, on the pop-up thread to the left... of course, you both are tweaking things, so obviously what we see would be shifting as you do. I personally like the chronological order to the left, as it is currently set.
Is there a way to put location/planting zone to the far right of the user name on each post, so folks know 'where' the poster is from? Just a thought. PNWGal's cutting post where she commented on location brought it to mind.
CiCiVacation I see now how to sort the latest threads by clicking on the 'following' button on the far left. Cool. That'll help declutter an active forum quite a bit...very nice! And I just figured out the thumbpin icon on the very top left, how it 'pins' the threads to the left if you wish. Sorry, I'm a slow study. Fun to play with features.
Thank you Amanda and hubby, for getting this up and running! Really appreciate your dedication to the dahlia world and peeps.
My Google saved passwords gave me the option to use the same DA password when I just signed up.

blown_dry thanks, Amanda (&@mr_blown_dry) ! It looks good, but I'll let others drive for a bit while I watch the road and check the map.
Amanda (and Mr. Amanda!), excellent choice for a forum, thank you both for setting this up!
I have one problem. My oldish eyes can not see the light text that is used various places on the site (left menu, dates, links, info,etc.). I see someone has written an extension for Flarum that gives the user the option of turning on a "high-contrast" mode for their individual display. I wonder if something like this would be effective?

CiCiVacation I'm looking into it. I was aware that location is useful information for this forum's users, so it's been on an informal "check later" list.
The forum core itself is very minimal, including the user profile, as you've probably seen. Most of the extras are from several extensions it ships with and a few additional extensions I added to improve usability. The image uploader/media manager and emoji picker are good examples of the latter.
Anyway, there are some possibilities. We can add a user bio. There is an extension that optionally allows adding first and/or last names that we could abuse. (And maybe more fields. I haven't looked yet.) We could also fall back on GeoIP, but again, I haven't looked at it yet either, so I don't know how granular it is. It wouldn't be much use if it just says "US". I would prefer location info to be optional anyway.
And, of course, anything could be added by writing our own extensions. I'm familiar with the PHP the backend uses but not the javascript-based Mithril presentation layer, so there would be a learning curve. It seems to be template-based, so it may be doable without getting too into the weeds but @blown_dry keeps me somewhat booked with new DAHLIAaddict features and updates. She did give me a couple days off to setup a forum, so there was that break.
SteveM Absolutely! I confess that I had concerns about contrast with the menus and links. I'll get the high contrast mode going ASAP.
Amanda!! It's beautiful!! Thank you!!!
